The flash-to-bang arithmetic, done properly. The severe storms laboratory gives the conversion: sound travels approximately one fifth of a mile per second, so dividing the seconds between flash and thunder by five gives the distance in miles. Count ten seconds and the strike was about two miles away. Count thirty and it was about six. Six miles is comfortably inside that range, so a thirty-second gap does not describe a safe margin, it describes a storm that is already capable of reaching you.
