Ninety point seven degrees Fahrenheit in Florida Bay, and a tidal range of 0.98 feet at the same station. Those two numbers are the same fact stated twice. Under a foot of vertical exchange means almost nothing moves through that water, and what does not move does not cool, which is why the hottest reading anywhere in this writing sits beside the smallest tide in it. The smallest tide and the hottest water are the same station

0.98 feet of range, 90.7 degrees of water.

The Florida Bay station publishes mean higher high water at 3.52 feet and mean lower low water at 2.54, a range of 0.98. Its water temperature that evening was 90.7 degrees Fahrenheit, the highest figure recorded anywhere across this writing.

Read the table by range and the temperature column sorts itself: 2.17 feet and 85.5 degrees, 1.81 and 89.4, 0.98 and 90.7. Less tidal movement, warmer water, in order.

The mechanism is exchange. Tidal range is a proxy for how much water actually leaves and returns each cycle, and water that stays put through a subtropical summer accumulates heat with nothing to carry it away.

So the defining property of this fishery in summer is not the heat by itself. It is the absence of the process that would otherwise relieve it.

Forty miles apart, and 46 per cent less tide

1.81 feet on the ocean side, 0.98 in the bay behind it.

Key West and the Florida Bay station sit close together in the same island chain, one facing open ocean and one inside the shallow bay. The ocean-side range is nearly twice the bay-side one.

That is the same barrier effect this writing measured on the Atlantic coast, where a lagoon behind an island received almost nothing of the tide arriving at its inlet. Here the barrier is a chain of keys rather than a single island, and the result is the same.

The bay side is also 1.3 degrees warmer, which follows directly. Restricted exchange and elevated temperature travel together because one causes the other.

An operator crossing between the two sides in a single day is crossing between two water bodies with materially different physics, and it is worth describing that way to a client rather than as inside versus outside.

Ninety degrees is a working constraint

The number sets the shape of the day, not just the comfort of it.

Water in the low nineties holds substantially less dissolved oxygen than cooler water, and the metabolic demand on fish rises at the same time as the supply falls. That combination narrows when fish feed and how well they recover from being caught.

The practical consequences are familiar to anyone who works here and invisible to most clients: productive windows compress toward the ends of the day, deeper channels and moving water matter disproportionately, and handling discipline stops being optional.

None of that makes summer unworkable. It makes summer a different job from winter, run on a different schedule, and priced and described accordingly.

The honest version of that conversation happens before the booking rather than at the dock. A client who understands why the boat leaves before first light will accept the alarm; one who was told it is always good fishing will not.

Thirty-six degrees between two saltwater fisheries

54.7 degrees in one place and 90.7 in another, the same evening.

The coldest saltwater reading in this writing came from a deep Pacific inlet and the warmest from this bay, and the two were measured hours apart on the same date.

Both are ordinary for what they are. One is a deep basin flushed continuously by cold ocean through a narrow entrance; the other is a broad shallow bay behind a barrier with under a foot of tidal exchange.

The comparison matters because the word saltwater is doing a lot of concealment. A Pacific inlet fishery and a subtropical bay share a category and almost nothing else.

For an operator that is worth stating in marketing, because a client who has fished salt water somewhere else arrives with expectations formed by a body of water that has nothing in common with this one.

Two licences and a boundary you cannot see

Fresh and salt are separate licences in the same park.

The park service states that a Florida freshwater fishing licence is required to fish in freshwater or to possess freshwater species, that a Florida saltwater fishing licence is required to fish in saltwater or to possess saltwater species, and that children under sixteen years of age do not require a licence.

In most places that distinction is trivial because the two are hundreds of miles apart. Here they meet inside one park, across a transition zone that moves with the season and the water year.

It also creates a possession question rather than only a location one, since the licence attaches to the species as well as the water. An operator running trips that cross the transition needs both, and needs to know which they are in.

Requirements and boundaries here are set by both a federal park and a state agency and they change; confirm the current position with both before a season rather than working from what was true previously.

Named closures, not general guidance

Specific ponds, specific trails, specific hours.

The park lists closures by name. No fishing at the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center lakes, the Royal Palm Visitor Center area and trails, Chekika Lake, along the first three miles of the Main Park Road including Taylor Slough, or along the Shark Valley Tram Road.

On the saltwater side it names Eco, Mrazek and Coot Bay Ponds as closed at any time, and states that no fishing is allowed at the Flamingo Marina during daylight hours.

A closure list of that specificity is not something to carry in memory. It is a document to re-read each season, and the daylight-hours qualifier at the marina is exactly the kind of detail that gets remembered wrong.

For a commercial operation the cost of an error falls on the licence holder, which makes this administrative reading part of the job rather than an optional courtesy.

Twenty fish, ten of any one species

The park sets a possession limit on top of the state's rules.

Licensed anglers are limited to possession of twenty fish per person at any time, and may possess no more than ten fish of any one species.

That is a park-level limit sitting above whatever species-specific rules apply, and it is the sort of stacked regulation that catches out visitors who checked one source and stopped.

For a guide it is straightforward to manage and worth explaining early, because a client who understands the limit before the first fish is landed will not argue about it later in the day.

It also fits the overall character of this place: heavily regulated, for reasons that are visible in the water, and with the rules attached to a specific named jurisdiction rather than to a general region.

A health advisory that shapes the offer

The park advises against eating bass from north of the Main Park Road.

The park states plainly not to eat bass caught north of the Main Park Road, and not to eat bass caught south of it more than once a week.

That is a mercury advisory and it is unusually specific, dividing the park by a single road. It also settles a question a client may ask on the water, and answering it accurately is better than deflecting.

Commercially it points the freshwater side of this fishery firmly toward catch and release, which is worth setting as an expectation at booking rather than discovering mid-trip.

It is also a reminder that a guide is often the only person a visitor will ask about this, which makes reading the actual advisory rather than repeating hearsay part of the professional obligation.

Range falls as you go south along the Gulf side too

2.87 feet at Naples, 2.17 in Tampa Bay, 1.81 at Key West.

The three Gulf and ocean stations show the same broad pattern this writing found on the Atlantic coast: tidal range diminishing toward the southern end of the peninsula.

Naples publishes the largest range of the four at 2.87 feet, and the figure falls steadily southward. The controls are shelf width and basin geometry rather than anything local.

What that means practically is that an operator moving between regions of Florida is not simply changing scenery. The amount of water moving under the boat each cycle differs by a factor of nearly three between the top of this table and the bottom.

Anyone reasoning about one part of the state from experience in another is going to be wrong about the single most important variable, and the correction is one lookup per station.

A foot of water is not a small version of six feet

Shallow systems behave differently in kind, not in degree.

Halving the depth of a body of water does not halve its properties; it changes which properties dominate. A deep basin is governed by exchange with the ocean, a shallow one by what happens at its own surface.

That is why a foot of tidal range and ninety degrees of water arrive together rather than as two separate misfortunes. Both are consequences of a system whose volume is small relative to its area.

The same logic explains the wind sensitivity, the speed with which conditions change after a front, and why local knowledge decays so quickly if an operator stops paying attention.

It is a genuinely different physical regime, and treating it as a warm version of somewhere else is the error most visiting anglers make before they arrive. A large temperate estuary gets a similar reading and reaches an opposite conclusion.

The transition zone is the interesting part

Fresh and salt meet inside one park, and the boundary moves.

Most fisheries sit clearly on one side of that line. This one contains the line itself, and its position depends on rainfall, season and how much fresh water is moving through the system in a given year.

That is why the park issues licence guidance covering both, and why the possession rules attach to species as much as to place. The regulation is shaped by a boundary that will not stay still.

For a guide it is also where a great deal of the interest lies, because a moving transition produces a moving set of species and a fishery that is genuinely different from one year to the next.

It also makes this water hard to describe generically, which is an argument for describing it specifically and in the current season rather than in the abstract.

What the temperature does to a release

Recovery is slower in warm water, and the margin is thinner.

At ninety degrees the oxygen available to a fish is at its annual minimum while the demand created by a fight is at its maximum. The gap between those two is what determines whether a released fish survives.

Everything that shortens a fight and reduces handling time matters more in July than in January, and the difference is not marginal.

That is a professional standard rather than a preference, and it is one of the clearest cases where a guide's decisions have consequences a client will never see.

Explaining it briefly on the water also raises the quality of the day. Clients handle fish better when they understand why, and they take the instruction from a guide who gave them a number. The booking-window data suggests those are the clients who come back.

Reading four stations correctly

Rank by range and the rest of the table follows.

The single most useful operation on this data was sorting it by tidal range rather than by geography. Do that and the temperature column falls into order, which reveals a relationship that latitude alone does not explain.

Naples at 2.87 feet is further north than Key West at 1.81 and Florida Bay at 0.98, and the temperature figures track the range rather than the latitude wherever both were served.

That is a small analytical move and it is the difference between a table of numbers and an explanation. The same reordering has worked repeatedly across this writing on rivers, on tailwaters and on estuaries.

The general form: when a column looks unordered, try sorting by a different column before concluding the data is noisy. The writing on multi-day packages depends on exactly that kind of seasonal legibility.

Two forecast offices and two radars in seventy miles

Key West covers the bay station; Miami covers the mainland side.

Put the Florida Bay coordinates into the forecast grid service and it returns Key West office territory, grid 88 by 58, zone FLZ077, radar KBYX, referenced to Marathon. The mainland backcountry near Flamingo returns Miami office, grid 84 by 20, zone FLZ075, radar KAMX.

Two offices and two radars across a distance a boat can cover in a morning, which is a fair indication of how many separate weather regimes this area actually contains.

Summer here is convective, and a thunderstorm developing over the mainland is a different proposition from one offshore. Knowing which product covers where you are going is operational rather than academic.

None of those products describes the water temperature, which on this fishery in summer is the variable that decides the day.

Shallow water, again, explains everything

Depth drives the tide, the heat and the boat.

Every finding on this page traces back to how shallow this system is. Restricted tidal exchange, elevated temperature, sensitivity to wind and the specialised craft required are four consequences of one property.

That is the same conclusion this writing reached on a shallow Atlantic lagoon, and the physics is identical even though the two places are on opposite coasts and look nothing alike.

What differs here is scale and jurisdiction. This is a very large area under federal management with named closures, stacked limits and a health advisory, which adds an administrative layer the lagoon does not carry.

An operator working here therefore needs two kinds of knowledge that have nothing to do with each other: how a foot of water behaves in a subtropical summer, and what a park document says this season.

What summer actually sells

Early starts, specific expectations, and a guide who explains the heat.

The instinct on water this warm is to talk about something else. The better approach is to lead with the number, because 90.7 degrees explains the schedule, the species behaviour and the handling rules in one figure a client can verify.

Clients accept constraints they understand. What they do not accept is being surprised by a four-thirty departure that nobody mentioned when the trip was booked.

Fixing that costs a paragraph on a website and no time on the water at all. What different species pay is the other input into how a summer offer should be priced against a winter one.

The operations that do this well end up with clients who return in the right season rather than clients who tried once in August and concluded the fishery was overrated.

What to build on water like this

A seasonal business, described seasonally.

The temperature range across a year here is large enough that summer and winter are genuinely different products, and treating them as one offer at one price serves neither.

An operation that publishes what each season actually involves, with numbers, is doing something almost nobody in this market does and something a client can check before committing.

It also improves the calendar. Clients who understand the seasons book the right one, which raises satisfaction and reduces the refund conversations that follow a hot August day.

The groundwork behind all of it is ordinary. The route into guiding, the state-by-state credential picture and the regional day-rate figures cover the entry, the paperwork and the pricing floor, and requirements change, so verify the current position before each season.

No date appears above and none will. This water is governed by a national park and a state agency, with closures listed by name, possession limits stacked on species rules and a health advisory dividing the place by a road, and all of it is revised on schedules an article cannot follow. What holds is the physics: under a foot of tidal exchange, water at ninety degrees because of it, and a fishery organised around both. That part is above. Every date, closure and limit belongs to the bodies that publish them, read for the season you are working.
