Salty Dog Inshore Charter Fishing

Night charters sit on the standing schedule here rather than being a special request. Captain Mitch Lattof III runs trips after dark around the pier lights of Orange Beach, Alabama and Perdido Key, Florida for speckled trout and redfish, mainly through the hot summer months. Daytime charters work the same back bays and inlets for speckled trout, redfish, flounder, sheepshead, white trout and black drum.

Lattof holds a 100 ton USCG license and was raised in an Orange Beach charter fishing family that he says spans four generations and more than 70 years. The vessel is a 25 foot 2019 Blackjack powered by a 350 horsepower Yamaha four stroke, described as a hybrid inshore and nearshore hull. Two high capacity livewells let the boat carry several bait types at once, the electronics are Garmin touchscreen units with fish finders, and a large forward casting platform gives room to fish standing.

Bait, tackle, licenses and fish cleaning are included, along with clean ice and bottled water. Anglers bring their own food and any other drinks, and a cooler with ice is supplied for whatever they carry aboard. Children aged nine and under are required by law to wear a life vest, and the boat carries several sizes. Clients who prefer their own tackle can bring it, and the captain will rig it for whatever method the day calls for.

Trips are cancelled and rearranged when conditions are not workable rather than run anyway. The operation notes that the boat is normally 10 to 15 minutes from a marina and a restroom, which it cites as one reason inshore work suits people worried about seasickness.
