Trips are sold two ways here: as standalone guided days on the Kenai and Kasilof rivers at 4, 6 and 8 hours, or as multi night packages that fold lodging at the Sterling lodge together with river days, an ocean day and, on the longest option, a fly-out. Pete is the guide and states he started more than 32 years ago, learning under Tom Stanton, and has worked in Alaska, Oregon and northern California. Boats take up to four anglers, fishing from power or drift boats, with some sockeye, pink and silver salmon taken from the bank. The stretch fished sits just below Skilak Lake. All 20 miles of the Kasilof are drift boat water, rowed by the guide. Rods, reels and tackle are supplied, and a day can end early once the legal bag limit is filled. The ocean day targets halibut and saltwater salmon; the fly-out crosses Cook Inlet to the base of the Alaska Range, about 20 to 30 minutes of flight each way, and runs roughly eight hours with bear and moose viewing en route. Guides clean and fillet the catch, but the lodge does not process or freeze fish, so guests take it to a processor themselves. A king stamp is required for any trip between May 15 and July 31.
