A Kansas prairie creek was warmer than the Gulf of Mexico on the afternoon both were measured. The creek drains four and a half square miles of grassland that has never been ploughed, inside a research station where the watersheds are burned on a published schedule. In this state the thing that changes the water is fire and grass, not a month. The seasons-by-state hub has the other forty-nine.

Was a Kansas creek really hotter than the Gulf?
By five degrees Fahrenheit, on the same afternoon.
At quarter to four on 27 July 2026 Kings Creek near Manhattan read 34.6 degrees Celsius, which is 94.3 degrees Fahrenheit.
A NOAA station on the Gulf coast of Florida read 89.2 degrees Fahrenheit that same day.
The creek was carrying 0.92 cubic feet per second with the gauge on 2.64 feet, from a catchment of 4.44 square miles at 1,095.23 feet.
Less than a cubic foot per second of water spread across a prairie in July has nothing to buffer it and no shade to sit under.
That is the warmest freshwater reading recorded anywhere in this fifty-state series.
It is also completely normal for that kind of stream on that kind of day.
Did the big rivers behave better?
Yes, and the reason is volume rather than latitude.
The Kansas River at DeSoto, draining 59,756 square miles from 754.12 feet, read 32.5 degrees Celsius; 6,550 cubic feet a second were going past, stage 7.33 feet.
The Smoky Hill River near Langley, from 7,857 square miles at 1,395.97 feet, came in coolest of the three at 28.0 degrees on 204 cubic feet a second, stage 3.96 feet.
So the smallest catchment produced the hottest water and one of the largest produced the second hottest.
Ranking Kansas water by drainage area gets you almost nowhere.
What separates these three is how much water is in them and what is growing over them.
An angler in this state should be thinking about volume and shade rather than about a calendar.
What is the ground doing to the water?
Almost everything, and the ground here is unusual.
Kings Creek runs inside the Konza Prairie Biological Station, a 3,487 hectare native tallgrass prairie preserve jointly owned by The Nature Conservancy and Kansas State University.
The station sits in the Flint Hills of northeastern Kansas, described as a grassland region of rolling hills overlain by shallow limestone soils unsuitable for cultivation.
That unsuitability is why the grass is still there: the vast majority of the station and the surrounding landscape has never been ploughed.
The Flint Hills region runs to over 1.6 million hectares in eastern Kansas, from near the Nebraska border south into northeastern Oklahoma, and includes the largest remaining areas of unploughed tallgrass prairie in North America.
Shallow soil over limestone sheds water quickly and holds very little, which is precisely why a four square mile catchment produces under a cubic foot per second in July.
The geology, not the weather, sets the baseline.
Where does fire come into it?
It is the region's actual seasonal event.
The station publishes records of controlled burns conducted in 2025 and in 2026, listing the dates on which specific units and watersheds were burned.
A grassland managed by fire has a genuine annual cycle, and it is one that changes what grows over and beside the water.
Burning is how tallgrass prairie is maintained, and the Flint Hills are burned at scale every spring.
For an angler that matters because vegetation cover, shading and runoff all follow from it.
It is also the reason a visitor to this part of Kansas in spring may find the horizon on fire and nothing wrong.
None of that is a fishing regulation, and it is the closest thing this landscape has to a season.
Why is a research creek worth an angler's attention?
Because it shows what unmanaged prairie water actually does.
The station has operated since 1971, supported by over $100 million in grants, and research there has produced over 2,000 scientific papers and more than 300 graduate theses and dissertations.
That is a very long, very well documented record of a small grassland stream.
Kings Creek is not a fishery and nobody should treat it as one; it is a control.
Its reading tells a visitor what a Kansas stream does without a reservoir upstream, without a city on it, and without irrigation taken out of it.
Every other number in this article is easier to interpret once you have that baseline.
The station is a research facility with its own rules for site use, and it is not somewhere to turn up and fish.
So where is the fishable water?
Behind dams, almost without exception.
A state whose natural streams run at 34.6 degrees and under one cubic foot per second in July does not have a natural summer fishery worth travelling for.
What it has instead is a large set of federal and state reservoirs, and the tailwaters below them.
That is the same arrangement seen across the plains and the lower Midwest in this series, and here it is close to total.
A visitor should therefore be planning around impoundments and their outlets rather than around rivers.
The Kansas River at DeSoto, at 32.5 degrees on a July afternoon, is a good illustration of what the unregulated alternative looks like.

Do these three sites share a forecast?
No, and one of them is served from Missouri.
The National Weather Service point for the Kings Creek gauge returns office TOP, recorded as Topeka, at grid 49 by 51, forecast zone KSZ022, radar KTWX.
The point for the Kansas River gauge at DeSoto returns office EAX, recorded as Kansas City and Pleasant Hill in Missouri, at grid 30 by 45, forecast zone KSZ103, radar KEAX.
Two eastern Kansas stations roughly a hundred miles apart, two offices, two radars, and one of the offices in a different state.
On open plains where a summer storm can be violent and highly local, that distinction is worth the one lookup it takes.
Both sit in the same time zone, which is most of what they have in common.
Check the zone for your own access point before you travel rather than trusting a statewide picture.
What does 0.92 cubic feet per second look like?
A trickle, and a lesson in yield.
That flow off 4.44 square miles is about 0.21 cubic feet per second per square mile of catchment.
The Kansas River at DeSoto was managing about 0.11 per square mile, and the Smoky Hill about 0.026.
All three of those are tiny numbers by the standards of the mountain and coastal states in this series.
A plains catchment in late summer simply does not deliver water, whatever its size on a map.
Which is another way of saying that the fishing here exists because somebody stored water when it was available.
Every reservoir on the map is a response to exactly the numbers above, which is why the guided-versus-alone piece reads differently on the plains than in the mountains.
How should a visitor read a Kansas reservoir?
By level first, and by temperature second.
A stored-water fishery rises and falls with what has been captured and what is being released downstream for other purposes.
Level changes access, ramp usability and where fish sit, often more than temperature does across a summer.
The tailwater below the same structure runs on release schedules rather than on weather, as it does everywhere in this series with a dam in it.
So the two halves of a Kansas trip ask two different questions of the same infrastructure.
Working out which you are asking takes one look at whether you are above or below the wall.
Choosing an operator is largely a matter of finding somebody who works one specific impoundment.
Why does shallow soil produce so little water?
Because there is nowhere for it to be stored.
Deep soil holds rainfall and releases it slowly into a channel for weeks afterwards, which is what keeps a stream running between storms.
A thin layer over limestone has almost no capacity to do that, so the same rainfall arrives fast and leaves fast.
The result is a stream that is briefly large after rain and then almost absent, which is exactly what 0.92 cubic feet per second in late July describes.
It also explains why grassland fire management and grazing matter so much to what happens to the water.
Cover on the surface changes how much of a storm runs straight off and how much soaks in.
None of that is visible from a road, and all of it decides what the creek does.
Does the reservoir change the whole equation?
It is the only thing that could.
Storing water when it is available and releasing it when it is not is the direct engineering answer to a landscape that cannot store it naturally.
That is why the plains states in this series are reservoir states, and why the fishing culture follows the impoundments rather than the rivers.
It also creates a tailwater beneath each structure with a temperature the surrounding country cannot produce.
Those two waters, the lake and the outlet, are the practical Kansas fishery.
Everything upstream of them is the Kings Creek reading, at whatever scale the catchment happens to be.
Planning around that rather than around a season is what makes a summer trip work here.
What does a warm-water day actually ask of you?
An earlier start and shorter fights.
At the temperatures recorded here, a fish played to exhaustion and held out of the water for a photograph is in real trouble.
Fishing the first hours after dawn keeps you on the coolest water the day will offer.
Deeper water in a reservoir does the same job later in the day, which is another argument for the impoundments.
Getting fish back quickly, and releasing them where there is some current or wind-driven movement, is simple and effective.
None of this is safety or regulatory advice; it follows from the readings and from ordinary practice.
It also travels to every warm state in this series without modification.

Is the eastern half different from the western?
Wetter, and it shows in the flow rather than the temperature.
The three stations here sit across the eastern and central parts of the state, and even between them the yields differ by a factor of eight.
Further west the rivers thin further and irrigation takes a larger share of what there is.
That makes the eastern reservoirs the practical destination for a visitor without a specific reason to go west.
It also concentrates the fishing pressure, which is worth planning around by choosing midweek days.

For a first trip, east and midweek is the straightforward answer.

What is a local operator selling on the plains?
Structure knowledge on water with no visible structure.
A large impoundment on flat ground gives a visitor nothing to read from the bank.
What is under it is a flooded valley with a former river channel, timber, roadbeds and creek arms, none of which is visible.
Somebody who has fished it for years carries that map, and it does not exist in public anywhere.
They also know what the current level is doing to access, which changes faster than most visitors expect.
On the small streams there is very little to sell, because there is very little water.

Is there a best time to come?
Not a month, but there is a temperature.
Water at 34.6 degrees Celsius is at the extreme end of anything a warm-water fish is comfortable in, and 32.5 is not much better.
Those readings are what late July looks like on unregulated Kansas water, and they argue for early mornings, deeper water and stored water.
The shoulders of the year avoid the problem entirely, which is why most people who fish here seriously do so in spring and autumn.
A summer visitor is not locked out; they are simply choosing reservoirs and dawn.
Fish handled in water that warm need to go back quickly and in moving water where possible.
None of that is a rule, and all of it follows from the numbers above.

Start from a specific reservoir or tailwater rather than from a river, because stored water is what this state's fishery is built on.
Find out what the level has been doing, since that governs access and structure more than temperature does.
If you must fish in high summer, fish early and fish deep, and treat the middle of the day as a rest.
Consider the shoulders of the year seriously: the readings above are what July costs you.
Pull the forecast for the zone your ramp sits in, because the offices change across the state.
Hire somebody for the impoundment, where the structure is invisible, and not for the creeks, where there is little to find.
And verify the current licence requirements, limits and any water-specific rules with the state wildlife agency before you fish.
