Two New Jersey rivers drain exactly 27.4 square miles each. That is not a rounding coincidence; it is the published figure for both. On the afternoon of 27 July 2026 one of them read 14.0 degrees Celsius and the other read 24.7. In the most densely populated state in the country, a river was sitting at 57 degrees Fahrenheit in the last week of July, and the thing that made the difference was not development or luck. It was 760 feet of elevation and 115 miles of latitude, both of which are printed on a page anybody can look up. The same two numbers are worth looking up wherever you fish, and the state-by-state series does it for the rest of the country.

Two catchments of identical size, ten degrees apart
The Pequannock at Oak Ridge and the Manumuskin at Cumberland both drain 27.4 square miles.
Matched catchments are rare and useful, because catchment size is the variable that usually swamps everything else when you compare two rivers. Here it is held constant to the published decimal, which leaves height and latitude as the things that can differ.
They differ a great deal. The Pequannock station sits at 783.53 feet at latitude 41.04, in the northern highlands. The Manumuskin sits at 23.11 feet at latitude 39.37, in the southern coastal plain. That is 760 feet of elevation and about 115 miles.
The result was 14.0 degrees Celsius against 24.7, a gap of 10.7 degrees, or 25 in Fahrenheit. The northern river was also carrying more water, 14.3 cubic feet per second against 9.06, which works out at a yield of 0.52 against 0.33 for the same size of ground.
The state's reputation and the state's record disagree
A river at 57 degrees Fahrenheit in late July, in the country's most densely populated state.
Fourteen degrees Celsius is properly cold water. It is colder than several readings this series has taken in New Hampshire and Maine, and it was measured about forty miles from Manhattan.
The department's own material says the same thing from another direction. Its freshwater section lists a study on the genetic diversity of wild brook trout populations in New Jersey and its conservation and management implications. That is not a stocking programme; wild populations with a genetics question attached are a different order of thing.
Around it sit pages on landlocked salmon, northern pike, tiger muskie and muskellunge, and, notably, on ice fishing. The state describes 90 species of freshwater fish in its waters. A visitor working from reputation alone would predict roughly none of that.
Half the temperature sensors here were not reporting
One station's most recent water temperature was from 2021 and another's from 2014.
Ask the survey for current values at the South Branch Raritan near High Bridge and a water temperature of 21.0 degrees comes back, dated 1 September 2021. Ask at Toms River and you get 17.5 degrees, dated 30 September 2014. Both are plausible-looking numbers and both are years old.
The flow figures at those same two stations were current to that afternoon: 30.9 and 61.3 cubic feet per second respectively, timestamped within the hour. So a single station can be reporting one parameter live and another parameter from twelve years ago, and nothing in the number itself distinguishes them.
That is why every figure quoted here carries a check on its timestamp, and why two of the four rivers on this page appear without a temperature. Anyone building a plan on a published water temperature should do the same check, because a 2014 reading dressed as a current one will send you to the wrong river.

The coast reads warmer than every river on this page
Sandy Hook's sea surface was 77.4 °F with air at 79.2 and a water level of 5.622 feet.
Converted, Sandy Hook's 77.4 Fahrenheit is 25.2 Celsius, which puts the ocean half a degree above the southern river and eleven degrees above the northern one. The air above it was 79.2 Fahrenheit, so on that evening the sea and the air were within two degrees of each other.
That is the usual summer pattern on this coastline and it has a practical consequence: salt water is not the cool option in a New Jersey July, and a visitor moving from the rivers to the shore to escape the heat is not escaping it.
What the coast does offer is scale and species that the rivers cannot, and a tide that moves water regardless of what the weather is doing. Building a shore day around that is a different exercise from building a river day, and timing an inshore booking goes through it.
Why the southern rivers stay steady when the northern ones drop
The Toms was carrying 61.3 cubic feet per second off 123 square miles at eight feet above sea level.
That is a yield of about half a cubic foot per second for every square mile, in the last week of a hot July, from ground that is essentially flat. The northern highland station managed roughly the same yield from a catchment less than a quarter the size and 775 feet higher.
The southern half of New Jersey sits on sand and gravel, and water moves through it rather than across it. Rain soaks in, joins the shallow groundwater, and returns to the stream channels gradually instead of arriving as a flood and leaving as a trickle. The result is rivers that are warm but remarkably hard to knock off their flow.
For a visitor that is a real planning advantage in the wrong-looking direction. In a dry August the southern rivers will still be carrying water when the highland streams are thin, and the trade you are making is temperature for reliability rather than one kind of water for a better one.
The Manumuskin is small enough to be read from the bank
Nine cubic feet per second is a stream you can cover on foot in a morning.
Nine and a bit cubic feet per second is about sixty-eight gallons a second, moving through a channel cut by a 27-square-mile catchment. In practice that means a narrow, tannic, sand-bottomed river that you wade rather than float, and one where the whole width is within casting distance for most of its length.
Water like that rewards a different approach from a highland freestone stream. It is clear and stained rather than clear and bright, the fish see a long way in it, and the cover is woody debris and undercut banks rather than pocket water and riffles.
None of that is visible from a set of season dates, and it is most of what determines whether a day there goes well. It is also the reason the two rivers at the top of this page, identical on paper, are not interchangeable in any practical sense.
Three New Jerseys, and they do not share a calendar
Northern highlands, coastal plain rivers, and the ocean, in descending order of coldness.
The readings on this page sort the state cleanly. The northern highlands hold genuine coldwater habitat, sustained by elevation, and that is where the wild trout question lives. The coastal plain rivers of the south run warm and steady out of sandy ground; the Manumuskin at 24.7 degrees and the Toms carrying 61.3 cubic feet per second off 123 square miles are both that kind of water.
The ocean is the third, and in high summer it is the warmest of the three rather than the coolest.
Those three do not share a season in any meaningful sense. The northern rivers are at their best when the air is cool and their worst danger is a hot dry August; the southern rivers are far more stable year-round; the ocean runs on migrations that arrive and leave on their own schedule. A single set of dates covering the state tells you which of them is legally open and nothing about which is worth driving to.
Distance is not the constraint people expect
The whole gradient in this article fits inside a two-and-a-half-hour drive.
One hundred and fifteen miles separates the coldest and warmest rivers measured here, and New Jersey is dense with roads. In practice a visitor based almost anywhere in the state is within a couple of hours of all three of its fisheries.
That is genuinely unusual. In most of the states in this series, reaching a different kind of water means a day of driving and a different set of accommodation. Here it means a morning.
The real constraint is access and pressure rather than distance. Water this close to this many people is fished hard, and the difference between a good day and a poor one is more often about where and when within a stretch than about which stretch. On pressured water that knowledge is the whole margin, which is the case made in the piece on what a hired day actually buys.
What regulars here do with a 760-foot gradient
They fish north in the heat and south in the cold, and they fish early.
Somebody who fishes this state through the year moves up the gradient as the summer builds and back down as it breaks. Fourteen degrees against twenty-five is a large enough gap to reorganise a season around, and it costs two hours of driving rather than a plane ticket.
They also start early, because on hard-fished water the first hours matter more than they do on remote water, and because a southern river at 24.7 degrees in the afternoon was several degrees cooler at dawn.
And they read the stocking information rather than ignoring it, because in a state with extensive stocking programmes and two named hatcheries, what went in and where is a real input. Anybody hiring for a day will get more out of asking about that than about fly patterns, which is the ground picking an outfit here covers.
What outsiders get wrong about fishing here
Assuming density means no habitat, and assuming the shore is the cool option.
The first assumption is the big one and this page's opening pair of numbers is the correction. A 27.4-square-mile catchment at 783 feet held water at 57 degrees Fahrenheit in late July, and the state has published research on the genetics of its wild brook trout.
The second is the coastal one. At 77.4 degrees Fahrenheit the sea was warmer than either river measured here, and treating the shore as an escape from a hot week gets the physics backwards.
The third is treating the Pine Barrens rivers as poor relations. They are warmer, and they are also remarkably steady, tannic, and full of species the northern rivers do not hold. They are a different fishery, not a lesser one. Families weighing a short drive to a southern river against a longer one north will find the trade-off in guided days with children.
Picking your altitude before your dates
Choose the end of the gradient first; the calendar follows from it.
For a July or August trip, the northern highlands are the answer and everything else is a supporting act. Base within reach of the higher catchments and the summer heat becomes something happening to other people's rivers.
For spring or autumn the whole state opens up, the southern rivers become genuinely attractive, and the driving shortens further. That is the window where a visitor can reasonably sample two of the three fisheries in one week.
If the ocean is the point of the trip, treat it as its own decision with its own timing, driven by migration and tide rather than by air temperature. There is a separate rundown of what to carry on a saltwater day.
The lookups that take twenty minutes
The station elevation, the timestamp on every reading, and the lake survey map.
Station elevation is the single most predictive number available for a New Jersey river in summer, as the matched pair at the top of this page demonstrates. It is published for every gauge and almost nobody looks at it.
The timestamp is the second, and this state makes the case for it more strongly than most: two of the four temperature sensors sampled here were years out of date while their flow sensors were live.

The states that put these numbers in context
Each neighbour has one piece of New Jersey's range and a different way of managing it.
Across the Delaware, Pennsylvania shares the northern highlands geology and has far more of it, which makes it the obvious comparison for the coldwater half of this state.
North, New York holds the headwaters and reservoirs that govern the Delaware itself, so what happens there reaches New Jersey's western boundary. South across the bay, Delaware has the coastal plain and the estuary without the highlands, which isolates that half of the picture.

Season dates, size limits and creel limits are all published by the state and none of them appear here. In New Jersey the date is rarely the thing a visitor gets wrong; the altitude is.
Also absent: permit and licence costs, any specific stocking schedule, and any water-quality or consumption advisory, all of which move and all of which belong to the agencies that issue them. No tackle advice either, which four gauge readings cannot support.
Two of the four rivers appear above without a temperature, because their sensors last reported in September 2021 and September 2014 respectively. Those values were returned by the service when asked for current data and have been excluded rather than quoted.
