Fishing Seasons in New Hampshire: A Trip-Planning Guide

You can drive the length of New Hampshire in about three hours. On the afternoon of 27 July 2026 the water inside those three hours spanned 12.7 degrees Celsius: the Connecticut River below Indian Stream near Pittsburg read 14.9, and the Isinglass River near Dover, 125 miles southeast, read 27.6. That is a bigger thermal range than several states four times the size managed on the same day, and it means the honest answer to when you should come here depends entirely on which end of a short drive you intend to fish. On the salt side the state answers the question a third way again, with quotas rather than dates. Forty-nine other states get the same treatment, filed under seasons by state.

Twelve point seven degrees inside a three-hour drive
14.9 °C at latitude 45.04, 27.6 °C at latitude 43.23.
Those two readings are 1.8 degrees of latitude apart, which on the ground is about 125 miles. Between them the water warms by 12.7 degrees Celsius, or nearly 23 Fahrenheit, and it does so on a single afternoon in a state you could cross twice in a working day.
Two things are stacking. The northern station sits at 1,150.96 feet in forested headwater country; the southeastern one sits at 107.80 feet in the coastal lowland, and that is a drop of more than a thousand feet as well as a change in latitude. Elevation and latitude usually work together in the same direction, and here they do.
The consequence for planning is unusually clean. In this state the coldwater fishing has a geography rather than a season, and the way to find it in July is to drive north or drive uphill, both of which are cheap here in a way they are not in Montana or California.
Two rivers with the same catchment and nothing else in common
The Ashuelot drains 71.1 square miles and carried 10.5 ft³/s. The Isinglass drains 73.6 and carried 3.80.
These two are as close to a controlled comparison as this series has found. Their drainage areas differ by three and a half per cent, which is nothing. What differs is height: 772.40 feet for the Ashuelot near Gilsum against 107.80 feet for the Isinglass near Dover, a gap of 664 feet.
The higher river was carrying 2.8 times the water and was 2.7 degrees Celsius cooler. That is what altitude buys in late July in northern New England, measured directly rather than assumed.
A visitor can use that relationship without any local knowledge at all. Take two candidate rivers of similar size, look up the station elevations, and the higher one is very likely the better July bet. It is a crude rule and in this state it is a reliable one, which is not something you could say in a place where withdrawals or dam releases dominate.
The northern station's flow does not fit the pattern
254 square miles produced 299 cubic feet per second, twenty-three times the yield of the coastal river.
Work the four stations as yield, in cubic feet per second per square mile of catchment, and three of them line up with the story above: the Isinglass at about 0.05, the Ashuelot at 0.15, the Saco at 0.62. Then the Connecticut headwater station comes in at about 1.18.
That is a very high figure for late July anywhere, and it is roughly twenty-three times what the coastal river was producing off a similar-sized piece of ground. Something is putting more water into that reach than rainfall on 254 square miles would explain.
What that something is cannot be determined from the gauge alone, and this page is not going to guess at it. The honest statement is that the number is anomalous relative to the other three, that anomalies of this shape usually mean the reach is downstream of storage of some kind, and that anybody planning around it should find out what sits upstream before assuming the flow is natural and dependable. The general problem of what published data can and cannot settle before a trip is exactly what going with somebody versus going alone is about.
On the coast, the season is a running total
The department's saltwater notice board carries quota and closure notices with mid-year effective dates.
New Hampshire's saltwater page publishes public notices alongside the licences and rules, and the ones posted there are not annual regulations. They include an Atlantic menhaden quota landings notice, an Atlantic herring 1A closure notice, an Atlantic herring days-out notice effective 22 December 2025, and a further menhaden quota landings notice effective 6 July 2026.
A quota notice is a season that ends when a number is reached rather than when a date arrives. A days-out notice restricts how many days may be fished in a period. Neither is knowable in advance from a calendar, because both depend on how fast the fishing goes.
Most visiting anglers are not directly bound by menhaden or herring quotas, and they are affected by them anyway: those two species are forage, and what happens to the forage shows up in what the fish you are after are doing. Whether that argues for booking a boat rather than a bank day is the calculation in whether a guided day earns its cost.
What the state's own coastal resources tell you

The saltwater section organises itself around licences and permits, recreational and commercial rules, research and reports, shellfishing, and a set of quick links that are worth more than they look: volunteer opportunities, coastal access sites, fish consumption guidelines and a red tide resource centre.
Two of those are conditions rather than regulations. Fish consumption guidelines and red tide information both describe a state of the water that changes, and both can affect a trip in ways a season table never mentions.
The freshwater side is organised in parallel: dates and seasons, a stocking report, where to fish, tournaments, boating and access, and a list of the state hatcheries. Between the stocking report and the access pages, most of what a visitor needs to choose a specific water is published free. Check the current rules and any open notices before you travel, because nothing in this article reproduces them.
Great Bay is the third fishery, and it is neither
More than 10,000 acres are protected within the Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.
The department describes the reserve as somewhere in excess of ten thousand protected acres, open for fishing, hunting, boating, hiking and birding, and as a classroom spanning open water, marshes, fields and forests.
An estuary of that size behind an 18-mile coastline is a large proportion of the state's saltwater habitat, and it does not behave like the open coast. It is shallower, it warms faster, it is fed by rivers, and its salinity moves with the tide and with what the rivers are delivering.
For planning purposes it is best treated as a third category alongside the rivers and the open ocean, with its own timing and its own species. It is also where the two halves of this article meet: the rivers this page measured all drain toward it or past it, and what they deliver changes what the bay is.
The tide is defined by an average that ended in 2001
Fort Point's mean diurnal range is 9.39 feet, computed over the 1983 to 2001 epoch.
The tidal station at Fort Point publishes a full set of datums: mean higher-high water at 12.1 feet, mean high water at 11.68, mean tide level at 7.36, mean low water at 3.05 and mean lower-low water at 2.71. The great diurnal range, the difference between the highest and lowest of the daily tides, is 9.39 feet.
All of those are computed over a 19-year averaging period running from 1983 to 2001. That is how tidal datums work everywhere: a long epoch is used so that the reference is stable rather than chasing the weather. It also means the numbers on your chart were fixed a quarter of a century ago.
Nine and a half feet of daily range is substantial, and on a small estuary it moves a great deal of water twice a day. It is the single most important physical fact about fishing this coastline, and unlike almost everything else on this page it is predictable years ahead. Timing an inshore booking is largely an exercise in matching a tide table to a calendar.
The station has no live sensors, and that is worth knowing
Fort Point returned no water temperature, no air temperature and no water level.
Asked for its latest readings, the station answered that those products are not offered there. It publishes datums and tide predictions; it does not publish live observations of temperature or level.
This matters because it is easy to assume that a named NOAA station means live data, and on this coast it does not. A visitor who plans to check the sea temperature before driving to Portsmouth will need a different source than this one.
It is also a reminder that the absence of a number is information. A station that publishes datums but not observations is doing a specific job, and knowing which job saves you from waiting on a reading that will never come.
One small state, three incompatible definitions of a season
A gradient, a landings quota and a tide table, all inside 190 miles.
On the freshwater side it is close to a matter of geography. The cold water is north and uphill, the warm water is south and low, and the dates in the regulations sit on top of a gradient that does most of the work.
On the open coast it is partly a quota, set by landings and announced mid-year, and partly a tide, predictable for decades. Those two could hardly be more different in character and they apply to the same water.
In Great Bay it is something else again: an estuary responding to river flow, tide and temperature at once. A visitor who arrives with one mental model of "the season here" will be wrong about two of the three.
What locals do with a state shaped like this
They move north through the summer and back south in the shoulders.
Somebody fishing here through the year is exploiting the gradient rather than fighting it. In July the northern rivers and the higher elevations are where the coldwater fishing is, and 14.9 degrees at Pittsburg against 27.6 near Dover is the whole reason.
In spring and autumn the southern rivers come back into play and the driving gets shorter. That seasonal migration inside one small state is the single most useful habit to copy, and it is unavailable to a visitor who books one lodge for a week without knowing which end of the gradient it sits on.
On the salt side they watch the notices and the tide, in that order, and they know that a herring closure two months ago changes what the water is doing now. Anybody hiring a boat will get further by asking about that than about tackle, which is the ground covered in picking an inshore operation.
What catches visitors out here
Underestimating the gradient, and assuming a small coast means a simple one.
The first mistake is treating New Hampshire as one place because it is small. Twelve and a half degrees of water temperature inside 125 miles says otherwise, and a week booked at the wrong end of that in July is a week of warm water.
The second is assuming that 18 miles of coast means an uncomplicated fishery. Between the open ocean, a ten-thousand-acre estuary and a nine-and-a-half-foot tide, the coastal side of this state has more moving parts than several longer coastlines do.
The third is reading a big flow number as good news without asking where it came from. The Connecticut headwater station's 299 cubic feet per second is the outlier on this page, and an outlier is a question rather than an answer. Whether a child will sit through the drive from Dover to Pittsburg is its own question, and guided days with children takes it seriously.
Choosing which end of the gradient to book
Pick the north in summer, the south in the shoulders, and the coast around the tide.
For a July trip, base in the north and treat the southern rivers as a curiosity rather than a plan. The elevation and latitude are both working for you up there and the drive back down is short if the weather turns.
For May or October, the calculation reverses and the southern and central rivers are comfortable, less crowded and closer to everything. The state is small enough that this is a genuine choice rather than a compromise.
If the coast is part of it, build that day around the tide rather than around the calendar, because a 9.39-foot mean range is the largest single lever available and it is published years in advance. Kit for a saltwater day is set out in the inshore packing list.
The three New England states that frame this one
Each neighbour has one of New Hampshire's three fisheries and not the other two.
North and east, Maine has the coldwater rivers and a coastline long enough that the quota notices and the tide behave quite differently along its length.
West across the Connecticut River, Vermont shares the same headwaters and the same elevation gradient with no coast at all, which makes it the clean freshwater comparison. South, Massachusetts has the estuary and coastal complexity at a much larger scale, and a very different set of upstream constraints on its rivers.

Not one opening date, closing date, bag limit or minimum length appears above. The department publishes all of them and this page deliberately duplicates none, because in a state where the temperature gradient does most of the work, the dates are the part a visitor is least likely to get wrong.
Absent for the same reason: any quota figure, any tide prediction for a named day, and any consumption or red tide advisory. Those move, and the offices that issue them are the only place to get them right.
Also missing: any explanation of why the Connecticut headwater station was carrying twenty-three times the yield of the coastal river. That was noticed here, flagged as anomalous, and left unexplained rather than filled in with a plausible story.
