Nevada's rivers do not reach the sea. They end, in a lake with no outlet or in a sink in the desert, and everything that happens to them on the way is therefore permanent. The Walker River near Wabuska was carrying 38.4 cubic feet per second on 27 July 2026; thirty-odd miles later, at its mouth on Walker Lake, it was carrying 13.3. Two-thirds of it had gone somewhere else in a basin with nowhere else to go. That arithmetic, rather than any calendar, is the thing that governs fishing in this state, and it has already finished one of Nevada's fisheries outright. A river that loses two-thirds of itself in its last thirty miles

38.4 cubic feet per second at Wabuska, 13.3 at the mouth, with 534 more square miles of catchment behind it.

The Walker River is measured near Wabuska, where it drains 2,600 square miles at an elevation of 4,300 feet, and again near its mouth at Walker Lake, draining 3,134 square miles at 3,940 feet. Between those two points it picks up a further 534 square miles of country and loses about 65 per cent of its water.

In a river that reaches an ocean, water taken out upstream is still in the system. It goes to a field, some returns to the channel, some reaches the sea, and the sea gives it back to the sky and eventually to the mountains. In the Great Basin there is no ocean at the end of that chain. Water that leaves the channel here evaporates from a field or a shallow lake and the basin is that much drier.

That is why the loss between two gauges matters more in Nevada than the same loss would matter in a coastal state. It is not a redistribution. It is a subtraction from a closed account.

The gauge at the mouth reads a negative number

Walker River near its mouth reported a gauge height of −1.86 feet.

A negative stage does not mean negative water. It means the surface of the water was 1.86 feet below the reference point the station was set against when it was installed, which is a straightforward statement about how far things have moved since.

Compare it with the other stations on this page. The Truckee near Nixon read 3.33 feet, the Walker at Wabuska 3.24, and a spring in the middle of the state 4.33. Those are ordinary positive stages measured against local zeros. The mouth station is the outlier and its number is a piece of history rather than a measurement error.

This is also a good reminder of the rule this series repeats: gauge height is measured against whatever datum a station uses and is not comparable between stations. What is comparable is flow, which is why the 38.4 against 13.3 comparison above carries the argument and the stage figures do not.

What is at the end of the Walker River

A lake whose dissolved solids exceed 21,000 mg/L, where fresh water is under 1,000.

The state describes Walker Lake as a terminal lake, meaning a lake with no outlet, fed by the Walker River from headwaters in the Sierra Nevada in California, and as a remnant of ancient Lake Lahontan which once covered most of the Great Basin.

Then it gives the number. Fresh water carries total dissolved solids of less than 1,000 milligrams per litre. Walker Lake now exceeds 21,000. That is more than twenty times the freshwater threshold, and it is the direct consequence of the arithmetic in the section above: water arrives carrying dissolved minerals, water leaves only by evaporating, and evaporation leaves the minerals behind.

The lake itself is nearly 13 miles long and 5 miles wide with a maximum depth of about 80 feet, so this is not a puddle. It is a large body of water that has been concentrating for a long time.

The state says the fishery is gone, in its own words

No Lahontan cutthroat trout has been reported by anglers or in sampling surveys since the winter of 2010.

The department is direct about it. The Lahontan cutthroat fishery in Walker Lake had been maintained only through stocking since the early 1950s. The trout no longer occurs there because of the dissolved solids, and even tui chub, which was the trout's primary forage in that lake, cannot survive the conditions.

Under better conditions, the department notes, those fish lived up to nine years and reached weights above ten pounds. The current fishing report, dated 29 June 2026, consists of one sentence: an increase in the lake level and a reduction in toxins is key to the fishery rebounding.

There is no season at Walker Lake in any useful sense, and that is a more complete answer to the question this series asks than any set of dates could be. The department still lists what the lake offers: boating, canoeing and kayaking, wind surfing and birdwatching, with a basic campground at the Bureau of Land Management's Sportsman's Beach site and primitive camping at many access points. Fishing is not on that list.

Thirty miles north, a different ending entirely

The Truckee arrives at its own terminal lake with 210 cubic feet per second at 23.1 degrees.

The Truckee River station near Nixon sits at 3,940 feet, which is precisely the elevation of the Walker River mouth station. Two rivers, two terminal lakes, two mouths at the same height above a sea neither of them will reach.

They arrive in completely different condition. The Truckee was carrying 210 cubic feet per second at 23.1 degrees Celsius off 1,827 square miles. The Walker was carrying 13.3 at 27.7 off 3,134. So the river with a catchment 42 per cent smaller was delivering nearly sixteen times the water, and doing it 4.6 degrees cooler.

Since elevation is identical and the climate over the two basins is broadly similar, the difference is about what happens upstream: how much is taken, where, and what is left to arrive. Two terminal basins in the same state, and one of them still has a river at the bottom of it. Reading that difference off published data before you drive is possible but not easy, which is the subject of going with somebody versus going alone.

A spring with no catchment at all

Big Warm Springs near Duckwater flowed 12.4 cubic feet per second at 33.0 degrees Celsius, and the survey publishes no drainage area for it.

Every other station on this page has a drainage area attached, because every other station measures a river collecting rain and snowmelt from a defined area of ground. This one has none, and the absence is meaningful: a spring is not draining a surface catchment, it is discharging groundwater.

It was also the hottest water measured in Nevada that afternoon, at 33.0 degrees Celsius or 91.4 Fahrenheit, which is why it carries the name it does. Warm springs are common in the Great Basin, where deep faulting brings heated groundwater to the surface, and they support a set of small endemic species found nowhere else.

For a visitor the practical point is that a Nevada water body's behaviour depends first on its source. Snowmelt from the Sierra, groundwater from a spring, and storage in a reservoir behave in three different ways through a summer, and reading a single statewide forecast tells you nothing about which one you are looking at.

Both mouths sit under the same forecast office and the same radar

Reno covers the whole of western Nevada, with KRGX as the radar for both rivers.

The national forecast service places the Walker mouth in grid square 76 by 67, forecast zone NVZ001, referenced to Schurz, and the Truckee at Nixon in grid 63 by 114, zone NVZ004, referenced to Nixon itself. Both belong to the Reno office and both take their radar coverage from KRGX.

One office and one radar covering two basins this different is worth keeping in mind when you read a regional forecast. The grid squares are separate and the zones are separate, so the products are specific if you ask for the right square.

What the forecast cannot do is tell you what has been diverted upstream, and in this state that is usually the more important variable. Air temperature and precipitation are published for everyone; how much water is being delivered to a given reach this week is not.

So what does a season mean in a closed basin?

Less than the water year does, and much less than the diversion schedule does.

Nevada does set seasons and they are worth reading. But the readings on this page describe a state where the binding constraints are how much snow fell in somebody else's mountains, how much of the resulting river was taken along the way, and what is left where you intend to stand.

The Walker Lake story is the extreme version of that, and it is instructive precisely because it is extreme. A season is a permission to fish; it is not a promise that there will be fish, and in a terminal basin the difference between those two can become permanent.

The practical version for a visitor is that Nevada rewards checking conditions much closer to the trip than most states do, and rewards flexibility about which water you end up on. Check the current stocking and fishing reports before you travel, since none of that information is reproduced here.

What people who fish Nevada do about all this

They fish the Sierra edge, the reservoirs and the tribal waters, and they keep two options open.

The great majority of Nevada's fishing sits in a narrow band along the western edge of the state, where the Sierra Nevada delivers cold water, plus a scattering of reservoirs and high-country streams elsewhere. Somebody who fishes here regularly is working that band and knows which reaches are receiving water this month.

They also treat the department's stocking reports as primary information rather than trivia. In a state where a great deal of the fishing is maintained deliberately, what went in and where is a real input into the decision, and Walker Lake is a reminder that stocking is a policy which can end.

And they keep a second water in reserve, because a river that has lost two-thirds of its flow between two gauges can lose the rest. There is a separate piece on picking an outfit here that gets into the questions worth asking.

The things visitors get wrong about this state

That it is empty of water, and that a famous lake still holds what it is famous for.

The first misconception is understandable and wrong in an interesting way. Nevada has real fishing, concentrated along its western edge and in its reservoirs, and a visitor who writes the state off is missing water that fishes well for much of the year.

The second is the more expensive mistake. Reputations outlive fisheries by decades, and a lake that produced ten-pound trout within living memory still carries that reputation in print, in old guidebooks and in conversation. The department's own page is the corrective, and it is a single click away from anybody who thinks to look.

The third is timing. In a state where the water arrives as snowmelt from another state's mountains, the useful question about July is what the winter did, and that is knowable months ahead. Families weighing the distances against a child's patience will find that trade-off handled in the piece on guided days with kids.

Building a week around the water that is still arriving

Base yourself on the western edge and treat everything east of it as a day trip.

Nevada is enormous and its fishing is not evenly distributed. A week built along the Sierra front, within reach of the rivers coming out of California and the reservoirs that store them, puts you within an hour or two of most of the state's reliable water.

From there, the interior becomes a set of optional day trips rather than the structure of the week: a high-country stream, a reservoir, a spring-fed creek. Any of those can be excellent and none of them should be the thing the trip depends on.

Where tribal waters are part of the plan, they are governed separately from the state and have their own permits and their own rules, which is a distinct piece of homework rather than an afterthought. When to book covers arranging any of this in advance.

Three numbers to look up before you drive

The winter's snowpack, this week's flow at your reach, and the department's page for your specific water.

The snowpack figure is the long-range one and it is available months before a summer trip. In a basin fed by another state's mountains, it is the closest thing to an early forecast of what July will look like.

The flow figure is the short-range one. Take it at the station nearest your actual reach, not at the station the river is named for, since the Walker's two stations were three-fold apart on the same afternoon.

And read the department's own page for the specific water. Walker Lake's page says plainly that the fishery is gone; other pages say what is stocked and when. That is twenty minutes that will change more trips than any general article can. What to bring assumes the water question is already settled.

The states that explain Nevada's water

Most of it falls somewhere else and is spoken for before it arrives.

The Walker and the Truckee both rise in the Sierra Nevada in California, so the snow that governs a Nevada July falls in California, and that page accounts for most of what the numbers here are doing.

To the east, Utah shares the Great Basin and the terminal-lake problem in its own form, with the Great Salt Lake as the largest example of the same physics. To the south, Arizona shows what happens when a desert state's water arrives through a reservoir system instead.

Read together, the three make it clear that in this part of the country the state line is close to irrelevant to the hydrology and central to the regulation. Budgets for a western trip are broken down in the fly-fishing pricing piece.

Not a single season date appears above, and in this state that omission is closer to the point than it is anywhere else in the series. At the water this page spends the most time on, the dates stopped mattering in 2010.

Also deliberately absent: licence and permit costs, limits, and the separate rules that apply on tribal waters, all of which belong to the bodies that set them. No ranking of Nevada's fishable waters, and no tackle advice, neither of which four gauge readings can support.

The Walker Lake description, the dissolved-solids figures, the 2010 date and the lake's dimensions are the department's own published statements, quoted as found. The claim that the trout is gone is the department's, not an inference drawn here.
