The lowest gauging station used for this page sits at 3,957.92 feet above sea level. In most of the states this series has worked through, that would be the highest station in the state by a wide margin. In Utah it is the desert floor. The four stations here span 3,958 to 6,237 feet, and the coldest water any of them reported on 27 July 2026 was 24.2 degrees Celsius. Elevation has been the most reliable predictor of cold water in almost every state so far, and in Utah it stops working, because altitude only helps relative to the land around you. That correction is worth carrying into the other forty-nine states too.

Four thousand feet is the floor here, not the ceiling

The lowest station on this page is higher than the highest station in most states in this series.

New Jersey's coldest river, at 14.0 degrees Celsius, was measured at 783 feet. New York's Catskill headwater, at 19.4 degrees, was at 1,225. Pennsylvania's coldest reach, at 16.2, was at 491.

Utah's four stations start at 3,957.92 feet and run up to 6,237.48, and the coldest of them read 24.2 degrees. So a state whose lowest measured water sits three thousand feet above New Jersey's coldest river was ten degrees warmer.

The lesson is not that elevation does not matter. It is that elevation is a relative quantity. What cools a river is being high compared with the country around it, in a place where getting higher means colder air. When the whole region is at four to six thousand feet in a desert, the air at those heights is not cold, and the rule that has held everywhere else quietly stops applying.

The air was reaching 103 degrees at the valley floor

Salt Lake City recorded highs of 103, 99, 87, 96 and 101 °F in the five days to 24 July.

Those figures come from the national climate record for the airport station, which has been logging daily maximum and minimum temperatures since 1948. Across those same five days it recorded 0.24 inches of rain in total, and three of the five days had none at all.

That is the context the water readings sit inside. A river cannot stay cold under air like that unless something is feeding it from underground or releasing it from depth, and none of the four stations here is doing either.

It also explains why the coldest reading came from the smallest and highest stream rather than from anything with volume behind it. East Canyon Creek was carrying 6.27 cubic feet per second off 57.2 square miles at 6,237 feet, and it managed 24.2 degrees. In a wetter state a stream at that height would be ten degrees colder.

The big rivers were the warmest, and by a small margin

The Colorado at 28.8 °C and the Bear at 28.5, against 26.2 and 24.2 for the two small ones.

The Colorado near Cisco drains 24,100 square miles and was carrying 1,810 cubic feet per second, a yield of about 0.075. The Bear near Corinne drains 7,029 and was carrying 287, a yield of about 0.041.

In most states in this series, volume protects a river from the air and the largest rivers are cooler than the smallest. Here the ordering is normal but the spread is not: 4.6 degrees separates the biggest river from the smallest stream, where elsewhere the same comparison has produced gaps of ten, twelve and fourteen.

Everything is converging on the air temperature. That is what a desert summer does, and it means a visitor choosing between a big river and a small stream in July is choosing on other grounds, because temperature is not going to separate them meaningfully. Whether that argues for local knowledge over published data is the question what a hired day actually buys takes on.

A stage of 7.14 feet on 35.6 cubic feet per second

The North Fork of the Virgin runs through a slot canyon, and the gauge reads accordingly.

Thirty-five cubic feet per second is a small flow. A stage over seven feet alongside it tells you the channel is narrow and deep rather than wide and shallow, which is exactly what the Virgin River is where it comes out of Zion Canyon.

That geometry matters for two reasons. A deep narrow channel gives water more depth to hide in and less surface area to warm, which is part of why this station read 26.2 degrees rather than something worse at only 3,958 feet. And it makes the river dangerous in a way a flow figure does not convey: a canyon that narrow rises fast when a storm lands upstream.

East Canyon Creek shows the same pattern in miniature, reading 4.28 feet of stage on 6.27 cubic feet per second. Both are reminders that stage tells you about the shape of a channel and never about how much water is in it.

Where the Bear River ends

7,029 square miles delivering 287 cubic feet per second into a lake with no outlet.

The Bear is the largest tributary of the Great Salt Lake, and the Great Salt Lake has no outlet. Everything the river delivers either evaporates or stays, which is the same physics this series found in Nevada and it has the same consequence: dissolved minerals concentrate over time and the lake gets saltier as it shrinks.

A yield of 0.041 cubic feet per second per square mile is very low, and it is what a heavily irrigated northern Utah valley produces in late July after everyone upstream has taken their share.

For an angler the Bear itself is a warmwater river at 28.5 degrees, and the terminal lake below it is not a conventional fishery at all. What the pair does illustrate is the arithmetic that governs the whole eastern Great Basin: water that leaves the channel here does not come back.

Two forecast zones, one office, two radars a long way apart

Salt Lake City covers the whole state, with different radars north and south.

The national forecast service places the East Canyon Creek gauge in grid square 112 by 174, forecast zone UTZ110, referenced to Summit Park, with KMTX as its nearest radar. The North Fork Virgin gauge falls in grid 42 by 21, zone UTZ124, referenced to Springdale itself, with KICX.

One office covering a state 350 miles long is unusual, and the two zones describe genuinely different climates: a Wasatch canyon at six thousand feet and a desert canyon in the far southwest.

The radar point carries weight in the south. Zion's canyons are narrow and deep, summer storms are convective and local, and a flash flood can arrive in a slot canyon from rain that fell somewhere you cannot see. That is a safety consideration before it is a fishing one.

The climate record runs three days behind

Asked on 27 July, the daily summaries ended on 24 July.

The national climate data centre publishes quality-controlled daily summaries, and quality control takes time. The most recent day available for the Salt Lake City station when this page was written was three days old.

That is a different kind of source from a river gauge, which reports within minutes and is not checked before publication. Neither is better; they answer different questions. The gauge tells you what is happening now; the climate record tells you what happened, reliably, with a long series behind it.

A visitor should use both and expect the lag. If you want yesterday's high, the climate record will not have it yet. If you want a defensible statement about what late July normally does here, the gauge cannot give you one and a record running back to 1948 can.

Yields that say the same thing four different ways

0.110, 0.103, 0.075 and 0.041 cubic feet per second per square mile.

East Canyon Creek came out at about 0.110, the North Fork Virgin at 0.103, the Colorado near Cisco at 0.075 and the Bear at 0.041. That is a narrow band by the standards of this series, which has recorded figures from 0.0008 in Oklahoma to 4.54 in Oregon.

What a narrow band means is that nothing in this sample is doing anything unusual. There is no spring system quietly delivering ten times what its catchment should, and no reach being drained to nothing by an upstream diversion. Four ordinary desert and mountain catchments, all producing roughly what a dry July allows.

The Bear is the exception worth noting, at roughly a quarter of the others despite draining seven thousand square miles. Northern Utah's valleys are heavily irrigated, and by the time the river reaches Corinne a good deal of what fell as snow has been spread across fields instead.

The reach that is missing from this page

None of these four stations describes a tailwater, and that is where Utah's summer coldwater fishing is.

Every state in this series gets four stations, and a four-station sample cannot cover a state that runs from the Great Basin to the Colorado Plateau. What this particular four leaves out is the category that matters most in July: reaches below deep reservoirs, fed from a layer the sun never reaches.

That omission is worth stating plainly rather than leaving a reader to infer that Utah has no cold water. It has a good deal, and almost all of it is manufactured, and none of it appears in the numbers above.

The practical instruction follows directly. If you are planning a Utah summer trip from published data, the gauges to look up are the ones immediately below the big storage reservoirs, not the ones on the rivers those reservoirs sit on. The four here describe the alternative, and the alternative in late July is warm.

So what does a season mean in Utah?

Which reservoir or tailwater you have chosen, because the free-flowing water is warm.

None of the four stations on this page describes coldwater fishing, and that is the honest picture of unmanaged Utah water in late July. What the state does have is depth: large reservoirs that hold a cold layer through the summer, and reaches below them fed from that layer.

That makes the operative document a release schedule or a reservoir profile rather than a season table, and it puts Utah in the same category as the southeastern tailwater states despite having nothing else in common with them.

The genuinely seasonal part is narrow. High country streams come into their own in a short window after runoff clears and before the heat arrives, and they close down again quickly. Below about seven thousand feet the summer is not the season.

What people here do in the last week of July

They go higher than any of these gauges, or they go below a dam.

Someone fishing Utah through a summer is either well above six thousand feet, in country these four stations do not reach, or on a tailwater. At 24.2 degrees, East Canyon Creek at 6,237 feet is already too warm to be a comfortable answer.

They also fish early and stop, because with air temperatures over a hundred the afternoon is not productive and the water warms through the day.

And they watch the storms rather than the forecast, because in canyon country a distant cell matters more than the sky overhead. Reading a distant cell correctly is a learned skill; how to size up an outfit covers finding somebody who has it.

What visitors get wrong about a mountain state

They assume the numbers on the contour lines do the work.

Six thousand feet sounds like cold water and in the Rockies proper it often is. In northern Utah, with the air over a hundred at the valley floor and almost no rain, six thousand feet bought 24.2 degrees.

The second misjudgement is treating the desert southwest of the state as unfishable and the north as reliable. The North Fork Virgin at 3,958 feet was cooler than the Bear at 4,207, because a slot canyon shades and deepens a river in a way an open valley does not.

The third is scale. This state runs from the Great Basin to the Colorado Plateau to the Wasatch, and the four stations here belong to three different worlds. Three worlds in one state means long transfers, which changes what a family day can look like; that gets its own treatment.

Building a week that survives a hundred-degree afternoon

Anchor on a tailwater or a deep reservoir and treat the streams as morning trips.

For a July or August visit, the reliable cold water is manufactured or stored, and the plan should start there. A reach below a deep release is the only thing in this state that ignores what the air is doing.

Keep a high stream as the early-morning option rather than the day's plan. Above the elevations sampled here there is genuinely good water, and it is a dawn proposition in high summer.

If the trip can move, late spring and early autumn open the whole state and the high country becomes the point rather than the fallback. Shoulder-season dates fill early here, and the booking-lead-time piece goes into it.

Three numbers to look up before driving

The elevation of the reach, the flow, and the last five days of air temperature.

Elevation first, and with a correction: in Utah, read it against the surrounding country rather than against sea level. A stream a thousand feet above its valley is doing something; a stream at six thousand feet in a six-thousand-foot basin is not.

Flow second, because with temperature converging on the air across the whole state, volume is what separates a fishable reach from a marginal one.

The three states this one is measured against

Two share the Great Basin and one shares the Colorado.

West, Nevada shares the closed-basin arithmetic that governs the Bear River and the Great Salt Lake, and its terminal lakes show where that ends.

East, Colorado sends the Colorado River and has the elevation Utah lacks, which is the cleanest test of the relative-altitude point made above. South, Arizona receives what is left of the same river and manages it through storage.

No season dates, limits, licence requirements or water-specific regulations appear above. Utah publishes all of them, and this page does not reproduce any, because the readings here say the binding constraint in July is physical rather than legal. Rules and fees do get revised between seasons, so read the current guidebook for whatever water you settle on.

None of the four stations describes the state's reservoir or tailwater fishing, which is where its summer coldwater fishing actually is. That is a limitation of this sample and it is named rather than glossed over.

The air temperatures are quality-controlled daily summaries for one airport station, and the series ended three days before this page was written. They are not a forecast and not a reading for 27 July.

The comparison with other states uses figures measured for those states on the same afternoon. Yields quoted here were calculated by dividing published flow by published drainage area; the survey publishes the two inputs and not the ratio.

Because the channel is narrow and deep. The North Fork Virgin near Springdale was carrying 35.6 cubic feet per second at a stage of 7.14 feet, which is what a slot canyon does to a gauge. That geometry gives water depth to hide in and less surface to warm, which is part of why it read 26.2 at only 3,958 feet, and it makes the river rise fast when a storm lands upstream out of sight.

What are the yields telling you?

That nothing in this sample is unusual. East Canyon Creek came out at about 0.110 cubic feet per second per square mile, the North Fork Virgin 0.103, the Colorado 0.075 and the Bear 0.041. That is a narrow band for a series that has recorded 0.0008 in Oklahoma and 4.54 in Oregon. The Bear is the outlier at roughly a quarter of the others, because northern Utah's valleys are heavily irrigated and much of the snowmelt is spread on fields before Corinne.
