What does one Colorado river do across a state?
It climbs from 16 degrees to nearly 34.
At 13:30 on 27 July 2026 Halfmoon Creek near Malta, 9,830 feet up with 23.5 square miles behind it, was reading 16.2 degrees Celsius at 11.4 cubic feet per second.
Fifteen minutes later the Arkansas River at Granite, 915 feet lower with 427 square miles behind it, read 21.7 degrees.
Downstream at Canon City, at 5,342 feet with 3,117 square miles collected, the same river read 26.1 degrees.
Near Rocky Ford, out on the plains at 4,150 feet with 11,090 square miles above the gauge, it read 33.9.
Four stations, one river system, one afternoon, and a spread of 17.7 degrees.
Why does the number climb so evenly?
Because two things accumulate together.
The gauges lose 5,680 feet of elevation between the top station and the bottom one.
Over the same distance the drainage area behind the gauge grows from 23.5 square miles to 11,090, which is a multiple of roughly 470.
More water, gathered from lower and hotter ground, with more surface exposed to the sun on the way down, produces exactly the progression those four readings show.
Nothing about it is unusual, and every state in this series has a version of it.
What makes Colorado the clearest example is the sheer vertical range: few states can put a fishing gauge above 9,800 feet at all.
It also means the phrase "Colorado water temperature" describes nothing useful without a station number attached.
What does that mean for trout specifically?
That the trout water is defined by altitude, not by season.
A river at 33.9 degrees on the plains is not a trout fishery on that afternoon, whatever it holds in April.
A creek at 16.2 degrees nearly 10,000 feet up is comfortable trout water in the hottest week of the year.
So the practical Colorado question is not when to come but how high to go, and the answer moves upstream as summer proceeds.
An angler who books a July week and then picks a stretch is doing the planning in the wrong order.
Pick the elevation first and July becomes an easy month rather than a compromise.

Does the state acknowledge this directly?
It runs a whole programme around it.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife publishes a summertime drought management section on its fishing pages, and the framing is worth reading closely.
It notes that water temperatures and stream flows can change during the summer months, creating adverse conditions for anglers, boaters, fish and other animals.
It adds that irrigation demands and restrictions on releasing water from lakes and reservoirs can also lead to low flows and high temperatures.
And it states plainly that lakes, ponds and streams can be temporarily closed to the public if water storage levels or stream flow drops below stable levels.
The agency publishes a running list of low-water and other drought-related closures rather than a fixed seasonal calendar.
A closure list that updates during a season is the most honest possible admission that the season is a condition.
How long is a Colorado fishing licence good for?
Thirteen months, which is not a typo.
The state records that annual fishing licences are valid from 1 March through 31 March of the following year, a span of thirteen months.
That is an unusual arrangement and a genuinely useful one for a visitor, because the overlap month removes the classic renewal trap at the start of a season.
Youth aged 15 and under fish free.
Boats are a separate matter: any boat operated in the state must be registered and carry an aquatic nuisance species stamp, with an inspection before launching and decontamination afterwards.
Check the current licence, stamp and inspection requirements with the agency before you travel, since none of those numbers are quoted here as current.
How much water is there to choose from?
More than a visitor can survey.
The state describes over 35 fish species across 6,000 miles of streams and more than 1,300 lakes and reservoirs.
Within that it designates 39 Gold Medal Waters and maintains a separate quality waters list of more than 50 lakes and streams with productive fisheries and public access.
Those two lists are the visitor's shortcut, and they exist precisely because 6,000 miles is not a searchable quantity.
The quality waters list is described as covering waters fishable by most angling methods, sometimes nominated for one species and sometimes for a suite of them.
Working from a designated list rather than a map is the difference between a planned trip and a hopeful one.
Choosing an operator is the same problem one level down, and worth the same care.
Where do the stocked fish come from?
Nineteen hatcheries, running since 1881.
The agency operates 19 hatcheries which breed, hatch, rear and stock over 90 million fish a year.
Some of that production supports angling directly and some serves native species recovery, which are different jobs with different water.
Its stocking report identifies where catchable trout of approximately 10 inches were recently placed, and it is updated every Friday during the fishing season.
The agency is explicit that many factors can affect when fish are stocked, so scheduled dates are subject to change without notice.
A weekly report that warns you it may be wrong is a more useful document than a fixed calendar that does not.
For a short trip, reading last Friday's report is worth more than reading a month of forecasts.
Does the state point anglers at the gauges too?
Directly, inside its own mapping tool.
Colorado's fishing atlas lets anglers search by species, by interest or by proximity, and its record of what each location shows includes stream gages with links to real-time data.
A wildlife agency building live streamflow into its own fishing map is a strong signal about what actually governs a day here.
It also carries stocked waters, boat ramps, accessible access and special fishing regulations in the same place.
So the state has already assembled the four things this page argues matter, and a visitor's job is mostly to use it.

Is this one weather system?
One forecast office, two very different grids.
The National Weather Service point for the Halfmoon Creek gauge returns office PUB, Pueblo, at grid 36 by 111, forecast zone COZ059, with radar KGJX and a nearest recorded place of Twin Lakes.
The point for the Rocky Ford gauge returns the same office at grid 128 by 54, forecast zone COZ093, but radar KPUX and a nearest place of Rocky Ford.
One office, two zones, two radars, and a 5,680 foot difference in ground elevation between them.
An angler using a Pueblo forecast for a gauge at 9,830 feet is reading a document about somewhere else.
Look up the zone for your own water once and the alerts you get afterwards are about the right ground.
What does a runoff year do to this?
Moves the whole gradient, without changing its shape.
In a heavy snow year the high stations run colder and fuller later into the summer and the fishable window upstream opens later.
In a light year the warm end of the gradient reaches further up the valley and the closures the agency lists become more likely.
Either way the pattern of cold-high and warm-low holds, and only the boundary between them moves.
That is why the useful preparation is a gauge reading in the week you travel rather than a seasonal average from any year.
It is also why local operators talk about the year rather than the month.
Booking lead times are worth thinking about in those terms too.
What does 23.5 square miles actually mean?
That the top of this system is a creek, not a river.
A catchment of 23.5 square miles at 9,830 feet is a small amount of country, most of it steep and much of it above the trees.
It produced 11.4 cubic feet per second on that afternoon, which is a stream you can cross in a stride and cannot float anything on.
Everything downstream of it is that creek plus several hundred others, which is how 11,090 square miles eventually gets assembled.
A visitor who reads about the Arkansas River and drives to the top of it will find something that shares a name with the river in the photographs and very little else.
Both are worth fishing and they require entirely different tackle, footwear and expectations, a split the guided-versus-alone piece takes further.
Deciding which of those two rivers you actually want is the first real planning decision here.
Does the same logic work on the other side of the divide?
The shape holds, the timing does not.
Every Colorado drainage runs cold at the top and warm at the bottom, so the elevation rule transfers across the state.
What does not transfer is the timing, because west-slope and east-slope drainages take snow off at different rates and get their summer rain differently.
Two rivers at identical elevations in different parts of the state can be a fortnight apart in condition.
Which is why a gauge on the water you booked beats any amount of general reading about the state.
The atlas the agency publishes carries those gauge links per location, so the lookup is one step rather than a research project.
Do that lookup for your specific reach and most of the guesswork disappears.
How should a short trip be structured?
One valley, two elevations, one day of slack.
Trying to fish three drainages in four days in this state produces a driving holiday, because the distances are mountain distances.
A better shape is one valley with a high option and a low option, chosen on the morning from the gauge and the sky.
That structure also survives a closure, because the two options rarely close together.
Leaving one day unscheduled is worth more here than anywhere, since afternoon storms are a normal feature of a Colorado summer rather than an interruption.
Operators build their weeks this way for the same reasons.
Ask yours what the high option is when you book, not on the morning it is needed.

What about the lakes and reservoirs?
They run on a different clock again.
More than 1,300 lakes and reservoirs sit alongside the 6,000 miles of stream, and a lake does not warm the way a river does.
Depth buffers a still water against a hot afternoon in a way a shallow plains river cannot manage.
That makes a high reservoir a sensible answer in the exact week the low rivers become difficult.
It also brings the boat requirements into play: registration, the nuisance species stamp, an inspection before launch and decontamination afterwards.
Those are real logistics rather than paperwork, and they take time on a busy morning at a ramp.
Anybody trailering a boat into the state should read the current requirements well before the drive rather than at the gate.
Why is local knowledge worth more here than usual?
Because the right answer moves upstream through the summer.
Somebody who fishes one valley all season knows which reach is holding temperature this week, which is knowledge that expires.
They know whether a closure is in force on their water and what it does to a booked day.
They know which access points sit at which elevation, which is not obvious from a road map.
They watch the gauges rather than the forecast, and they have years of context for the numbers.
On a river that spans nearly 6,000 vertical feet, that context is the product.
Whether a guided day repays itself is argued out separately.
How big is this fishery economically?
Larger than most visitors assume.
The agency reports that more than $2.0 billion was spent by anglers participating in fishing in Colorado during 2022.
It records that fishing in the state supported over 15,000 jobs that year, providing more than $860 million in salaries and wages.
Numbers on that scale explain why the state maintains 19 hatcheries, an atlas, a designated-waters programme and a live closure list.
They also explain the crowding a visitor meets on the best-known reaches in July.
Fishing further up, or further out, is a response to that as much as to temperature.
None of those figures is a forecast, and all of them are the agency's own published accounting for a stated year.
What nobody expects on a first trip

Planning a Colorado trip, in order
Elevation, list, closure, gauge.
Choose the elevation band before the week, because in this state altitude is the season.
Work from the designated waters lists rather than from 6,000 miles of stream.
Check the live closure list for your intended water before committing to anything.
Read the gauge for the nearest station, and read it as a temperature question as much as a flow one.
If you want stocked water for a short trip, read last Friday's stocking report.
Pull the forecast for that gauge's zone rather than for the nearest city on the plains.
And take the licence rules, the boat stamp requirement and every water-specific regulation from the agency itself, because this page states none of them.

No date appears above, and in a state where the fishable water moves uphill through the summer a date would be the least useful thing on the page. Nothing here is a season, a bag limit, a size limit, a licence fee or a closure notice. The four gauge readings are single instantaneous temperatures at stated minutes on one afternoon. Streamflow values returned for the Granite and Canon City stations carried timestamps from 2004 and 2006 respectively and are deliberately excluded rather than repeated as current. No reach is recommended, none is described as fishing well or badly, and nothing above says any water is open.
