Wyoming contains the highest gauging station this series has used anywhere, at 8,258.57 feet, and two rivers whose water production differs by a factor of more than three hundred. Pine Creek above Fremont Lake drains 76.3 square miles in the Wind River Range and was delivering 211 cubic feet per second on 27 July 2026, which works out at 2.77 for every square mile behind it. The Laramie River near Fort Laramie drains 4,564 square miles of plains and was delivering 39.8, which works out at 0.0087. Sixty times the ground, a fifth of the water. Two point seven seven, and it is snowmelt
Only one river anywhere in this series has produced a higher yield.
Pine Creek above Fremont Lake came out at about 2.77 cubic feet per second per square mile. The only higher figure recorded across the whole country was 4.54, on an Oregon river draining a volcanic aquifer, and the next closest was 2.51 on a Washington rain-forest river.
This one is neither a spring nor a rain forest. It is a 76-square-mile catchment in the Wind River Range at 7,450 feet, still delivering snowmelt at the end of July from ground that holds snow into the summer.
That is the mountain west working exactly as its reputation suggests, and it is worth noting how rare it is even here. Most of the western rivers in this series have been thin by late July because their snow had already gone. A yield near three at this date means the catchment is high enough and cold enough that it has not finished melting.
The highest station in this series read 18.8 degrees
8,258.57 feet, and warmer than a creek 800 feet lower.
The Encampment River above Hog Park Creek sits higher than any other station used across fifty states, and it read 18.8 degrees Celsius on 33.6 cubic feet per second off 72.7 square miles.
Pine Creek, at 7,450 feet, read 17.3. So the higher station was the warmer one by one and a half degrees, and the difference is volume: Pine Creek was carrying more than six times the water off a catchment barely larger.
This is the pattern this series has met repeatedly and it is worth stating once more at the top of the country. Altitude sets the ceiling on how cold a river can be; volume decides how close it gets. Eight thousand feet promises nothing on its own, and a bigger snowmelt flow eight hundred feet lower will beat it.
Nought point zero zero eight seven
4,564 square miles produced 39.8 cubic feet per second.
The Laramie River near Fort Laramie sits at 4,216.64 feet on the plains in the southeast corner of the state. Its yield of about 0.0087 is among the four or five lowest figures this series has recorded anywhere, comparable with what Oklahoma's prairie rivers and South Dakota's badlands were producing.
Two things are happening and both are ordinary. The eastern half of Wyoming is high plains with modest precipitation, and the Laramie has a great deal of irrigated agriculture along its length, so what reaches Fort Laramie is what is left after a long season of withdrawals.
Set beside Pine Creek's 2.77, the two figures describe a single state with a 318-fold internal range. No other state in this series has managed a spread like that, and it means a Wyoming plan built on the wrong half of the state is not a slightly worse plan; it is a different activity. Getting the half right matters more here than anywhere else in this series, which is one argument taken up in the case for hiring somebody.
A station with no catchment, no elevation and no live values
The Belle Fourche at Devils Tower has been returning November 2025 readings.
Asked for current values, that station returns a water temperature of 3.6 degrees Celsius and a gauge height of 1.37 feet, both stamped 1 November 2025. It publishes no drainage area and no station elevation, and no streamflow at all.
A temperature of 3.6 degrees is obviously a late-autumn reading, and anybody who checked the date would catch it. Anybody who did not would have a plausible-looking figure for a river in a well-known place.
It is the fourth kind of data absence this page has to handle, alongside the Laramie's temperature sensor that last reported in October 2024. Between the four stations, two temperature values and one whole station were unusable, which is a normal ratio in this series rather than an unusual one.
The air at Lander was in the eighties and nineties
Highs of 88, 82, 86 and 95 °F in the four days to 24 July.
Those come from the national climate record for Lander airport, whose daily highs and lows go back to 1948. Across the same four days it recorded 0.51 inches of rain, almost all of it on two days.
That is the context Pine Creek's 17.3 degrees sits inside, and it makes the reading more impressive rather than less. A river holding 63 Fahrenheit under air in the nineties is being fed from somewhere the air cannot reach, and at this date and this elevation that means snow.
The climate record runs about three days behind the present, because the daily summaries are quality-controlled before publication. A river gauge reports within minutes and is not checked; the two sources answer different questions and a visitor should expect the lag.
Two offices, and one of them is named after a region
Pine Creek is covered by Western and Central Wyoming; the Encampment by Cheyenne.
The national forecast service places the Pine Creek gauge in grid square 72 by 114, forecast zone WYZ014, referenced to Pinedale, under an office it names simply Western and Central Wyoming, with KRIW as the radar. The Encampment gauge falls in grid 40 by 14, zone WYZ112, referenced to Encampment itself, under the Cheyenne office with KCYS.
Almost every other forecast office in this series is named after a city. This one is named after a region, which is a fair reflection of how much of Wyoming has no city near enough to name an office after.
In mountain country the grid squares matter more than usual. A forecast for a valley town does not describe a basin at eight thousand feet, and the two zones here cover terrain that differs by four thousand feet.
Six times the flow off the same amount of ground
Pine Creek and the Encampment drain 76.3 and 72.7 square miles.
Those two catchments are within five per cent of each other, which makes them close to a controlled comparison, and their flows were 211 and 33.6 cubic feet per second. Six and a quarter times apart, from almost exactly the same area of ground.
The Encampment station is 808 feet higher, so elevation cannot explain it. What can is where the snow was. Pine Creek drains the western flank of the Wind River Range, one of the snowiest catchments in the state; the Encampment drains the Sierra Madre in the far south, which holds less and loses it sooner.
Two mountain streams of identical size, both above seven thousand feet, and one had finished melting while the other had not. That is the variable a Wyoming visitor is actually planning around, and no map or contour line shows it.
What a 318-fold range does to advice
Any sentence beginning "in Wyoming" is probably wrong somewhere in Wyoming.
This series has produced a lot of statewide generalisations and most of them have survived. Here they do not. A yield of 2.77 and a yield of 0.0087 are not two points on a spectrum; they are two different hydrological worlds that happen to share a licence.
The practical version is that a visitor should discard state-level information about Wyoming almost entirely and work at the level of the range or the basin. Which mountains, which side of them, and what the winter did there.
That is more work than reading a season table, and it is the only approach that produces a reliable answer. The alternative is arriving at a plains river in late July with expectations formed by photographs of the Wind Rivers, which is the single most common way to waste a week here.
Half a state's stations were not usable
Two of four, and one of those was dark entirely.
Across fifty states this series has found dead sensors everywhere, and the ratio here is worth pausing on because Wyoming is the state where published data matters most. With a 318-fold internal range, a visitor cannot generalise from experience and has to read the numbers, and half the numbers were not there.
The Belle Fourche at Devils Tower is the worse case: no drainage area, no station elevation, no streamflow, and a temperature and stage both stamped 1 November 2025. That is a well-known place on a well-known river with essentially no live record.
The Laramie was the more ordinary failure, live on flow and stage with a temperature sensor that stopped in October 2024. Between them the lesson is the one this series has repeated from the first article: check the date attached to each individual value, not the station, and expect to discard some.
Four thousand feet between the two live stations
8,258.57 feet at the Encampment, 4,216.64 at Fort Laramie.
That is the widest usable elevation range in this series after Colorado's, and the two ends belong to different climates as well as different heights. One is a subalpine basin in the Sierra Madre; the other is irrigated high plains.
What makes the pair awkward is that only one of them has a live temperature, so the elevation-to-temperature relationship cannot be drawn cleanly for Wyoming from this sample. The Encampment at 18.8 degrees is the only high-country reading available, and Pine Creek at 17.3 is the only other one.
That is a limitation of the data rather than of the state, and it is worth naming. What the flow figures do support is the yield conclusion, since both the Laramie and the Belle Fourche were live on discharge or clearly dry. The temperature story here rests on two stations, and two stations is thin.
So what does a season mean in Wyoming?
Whether the snow has finished, and which half of the state you are in.
On the mountain side, the season is a runoff calendar. Rivers are unfishably high through the melt, then come into shape, then thin as the snowpack runs out, and the date that happens moves by weeks from year to year depending on the winter.
Pine Creek at 2.77 in the last week of July says this year's melt had not finished at that elevation. That is useful information and it is entirely a property of the year rather than of the calendar.
On the plains side, the season is irrigation. The Laramie at 0.0087 is what is left after a summer of withdrawals, and no set of dates describes it. The two halves of this state do not share a season in any meaningful sense.
What people here do at the end of July
They watch the snowpack, then the flow, and they go high.
Somebody who fishes Wyoming through a season is following the melt up the mountain. Early summer means the lower reaches; by late July they are in the high basins where Pine Creek's kind of flow still exists.
They also treat the previous winter as the single most predictive fact about the year, because it is. A heavy snow year extends the good fishing by weeks at altitude and a light one shortens it at both ends.

What visitors get wrong about this state
They average it, and there is nothing here to average.
A 318-fold range in water yield inside one state means a statewide statement is close to meaningless. Wyoming is a mountain state and a plains state sharing a border, and almost every useful fact applies to one and not the other.
The second misjudgement is assuming altitude alone finds cold water. The highest station in this entire series read 18.8 degrees, warmer than a creek eight hundred feet below it with six times the flow.
The third is planning from a calendar rather than a snowpack. The date the melt finishes is the date the season changes, and it is not the same date twice. With children along, the high basins mean altitude and long drives, which is the trade-off in a piece on family days.
Building a week around a runoff curve
Go as high as the access allows and check the flow trend, not just the flow.
For a late-summer trip, the high basins are the answer and everything below them is a fallback. Pine Creek's yield is what that looks like in a number, and the reaches worth fishing are the ones still fed by snow.
Read the flow as a trend rather than a snapshot. A river dropping fast is telling you the melt is ending; one holding steady has more left. A single reading cannot distinguish the two, and a week of readings can.

Three things to check before driving
The winter snowpack, the yield ratio, and every timestamp.
Snowpack first, because it is available months ahead and it sets the whole shape of the season at altitude.
The yield ratio second: published flow divided by published drainage area. On this page it separated a mountain creek from a plains river by a factor of 318, and it takes ten seconds.

Where this water goes once it leaves
Wyoming is upstream of most of the interior west.
North, Montana shares the same ranges and the same runoff calendar, with irrigation doing to its valley rivers what it does to the Laramie here.
West, Idaho receives water that starts in these mountains. South, Colorado has the same combination of very high country and very dry plains, and reading the two together shows how consistent that pattern is across the Rockies.

Nothing here describes Yellowstone National Park water, which sits under separate federal rules and a separate permit system, or the state's tailwater and reservoir fisheries, none of which these four stations reach.
