How cold does Connecticut water actually get in July?

Ten degrees Celsius, at 485 feet.

Station 01186000 logged the West Branch Farmington River at Riverton at 10.2 degrees Celsius that afternoon, pushing 114 cubic feet each second, the gauge standing at 3.65 feet.

Its gauge sits at 484.89 feet with 131 square miles of catchment behind it.

For scale, on the same day a coastal Alaskan river read 13.7 degrees and a Colorado creek nearly 10,000 feet up read 16.2.

A small New England state at under 500 feet was running six degrees colder than a mountain creek at twenty times the altitude.

Nothing about latitude or elevation explains that, and the explanation is upstream storage releasing cold water from depth.

What makes that possible in a small state?

Depth upstream, and a short distance downstream.

Cold water released from the bottom of a reservoir stays cold only until the sun and the air get at it, which is a function of distance and volume.

A 131 square mile catchment gauged close below its storage has not had far to travel or long to warm.

That is a small, engineered coldwater fishery in a place with no natural business having one in July.

Which is exactly why it supports guided trout fishing in a state most anglers associate with striped bass.

The whole thing is a hydrological accident that a fishery has been built around, and it behaves accordingly.

What was the rest of the state doing?

Running small, and running warm.

The Salmon River near East Hampton had 25.1 cubic feet a second going past, stage 2.23 feet, off 100 square miles gauged 63 feet above sea level.

The Naugatuck at Beacon Falls was carrying 105 cubic feet per second at a stage of 1.06 feet, from 260 square miles at 114 feet.

Those are late-summer numbers on rain-fed New England rivers, and they describe water that a hot week will change quickly.

The Farmington station was carrying more water than the Naugatuck from half the catchment, which is the release doing the work rather than the weather.

One managed river and two unmanaged ones, in a state you can drive across in ninety minutes.

And the salt water?

Nearly sixty degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the tailwater.

The NOAA station at New London, at latitude 41.371666 and longitude -72.09556, reported Long Island Sound at 69.1 degrees Fahrenheit at 16:06 that afternoon.

Air temperature at the same station was 73.6 degrees Fahrenheit and the water level stood at 1.586 feet.

The station is recorded as tidal and runs on Eastern Standard Time.

Convert the tailwater reading and the gap is roughly fifty-nine degrees Fahrenheit between two Connecticut fisheries about fifty miles apart.

A visitor with one week and one licence is choosing between water at 50 degrees Fahrenheit and water at 69.

Those are not two versions of a fishing trip; they are two different sports.

Does Connecticut draw the boundary on a map?

Literally, and it calls it a demarcation line.

The state's freshwater fishing guide carries a section on the demarcation line, which sets the point at which a freshwater licence becomes the one you need.

The guide records that a fishing licence supporting fishing in the inland district is required upstream of the indicated landmarks.

So on a Connecticut river the licence question is answered by where you are standing rather than by what month it is.

Anybody fishing a tidal river without knowing which side of that landmark they are on has a paperwork problem they cannot see.

Changes flow without changing temperature much.

On a rain-fed river a dry week means falling flow and rising temperature together, and both move in the same direction.

On a release-fed river the temperature is set by the depth the water is drawn from, and it holds while the flow swings with whatever the operator is doing.

That decoupling is unusual, and it is why an angler used to natural rivers can misread this water badly.

A big flow change on a tailwater is a wading and safety question rather than a temperature question.

A visitor should treat a rising number there as information about access, not about whether the fish will feed.

Which of the two you are on is answered by whether there is storage upstream, and that is a thirty-second question.

How much pressure is there, really?

Enough that timing beats location.

A state this size with this many people nearby means the good access points are known to everybody who fishes.

The lever a visitor actually controls is not which pool but which hour and which day.

Early on a weekday is a different river from mid-morning on a Saturday, on exactly the same water.

That is more true here than in the western states in this series, where distance does the filtering instead.

It also means the marginal value of local advice is high, because the quiet options are local knowledge by definition.

Worth weighing against the cost, which the worth-it piece does properly.

What should a first visit actually try?

Cramming both into one day is possible here and usually produces two rushed halves.

Splitting them across two days costs nothing in driving and gives each fishery a fair hearing.
