It is not a hatch chart or a stocking schedule; it is a map of where a single-celled organism has been found in the last eight days. Where does cool water come from in a flat state?

Out of the ground, and nowhere else.

At half past three on 27 July 2026 the Silver River near Ocala was at 25.8 degrees Celsius, carrying 347 cubic feet per second at a gage height of 0.66 feet.

At the same minute the St Johns River near De Land read 31.3 degrees, moving 2,300 cubic feet per second at a stage of 1.01 feet.

Five and a half degrees separated two central Florida waters about thirty miles apart, on the same afternoon.

The St Johns station is recorded with a gauge datum of negative 0.09 feet and drains 3,066 square miles.

There is no altitude here doing that, and no dam either.

The cool water is spring water, arriving from underground at close to the temperature it left.

Why does a spring run stay that temperature?

Because the ground is a very good thermostat.

Water emerging from a large spring has spent long enough underground to sit near the mean annual temperature of the rock it passed through.

That figure barely moves across a year, which is why a spring run is one of the few Florida waters where a summer reading tells you something about a winter one.

A river fed by rain and swamp, like the St Johns, tracks the air instead and reaches the low thirties Celsius in a normal July.

So Florida has a stable-temperature fishery and a variable-temperature fishery running side by side in the same county.

Which of those two you fish decides whether the month matters at all.

A gauge on the specific water answers that in seconds and a seasonal chart never will.

And the salt water?

Warmer than either, and warmer the further north you go.

The NOAA station at St Petersburg, at latitude 27.7606 and longitude -82.6269, recorded 87.1 degrees Fahrenheit at 16:18 that afternoon, with air at 80.4.

Clearwater Beach, an hour up the coast at 27.9783 and -82.8317, matched it exactly at 87.1 with air at 82.0.

Cedar Key, further north again at 29.135 and -83.0317, was the warmest of the three at 89.2 degrees Fahrenheit.

Latitude ran the wrong way that afternoon, because a shallow shelf inshore heats faster than deeper water further south.

Depth and exposure decide Gulf water temperature here far more than how far north the station sits.

Which is another way of saying that Florida's fishing geography is horizontal rather than vertical.

What actually interrupts a Florida season?

A bloom, and the state maps it daily.

Florida's wildlife commission runs a red tide programme and states plainly that in Florida the species which causes most red tides is Karenia brevis.

It publishes a daily sample map holding the last eight days of sampling, updated daily at 5 p.m.

Alongside that it reports current bloom status using tables, static maps and interactive Google Earth maps, with archived status maps kept in a public gallery.

That is a fishing calendar in the only form this state can honestly produce one: an eight-day rolling window, refreshed every afternoon.

No published season, anywhere, is more current than that or less useful more than a week ahead.

Check the current status for the specific stretch of coast you intend to fish before you travel, and again before you drive.

How seriously does the state take it?

It has built institutions around it.

The commission maintains a Center for Red Tide Research, described as enhancing statewide management of harmful algal blooms by advancing and employing applied research and observations.

There is a Harmful Algal Bloom and Red Tide Task Force, whose role is described as determining strategies to research, monitor, control and mitigate red tide and other harmful algal blooms in Florida waters.

It runs a monitoring database, a community scientist programme for red tide sampling, and a set of hotlines for reporting fish kills and wildlife effects.

It also points members of the public to health authorities on questions of human exposure rather than answering those itself.

A state that stands up a task force and a research centre for one organism is telling you how much of its coastal economy rides on the answer.

For a visitor, the practical version is simply that the map is worth more than any monthly guide.

How is the tracking actually done?

Field sampling plus partner tools.

The commission describes its scientists as combining field sampling with tools maintained by state and federal partners to track red tides and their effects.

That combination matters, because a bloom is a moving thing and a sample is a point.

An eight-day window of points, refreshed daily, is an honest representation of something that cannot be forecast far ahead.

It also explains why the map carries individual sampling dots you can click rather than a smoothed coloured zone.

A visitor reading it should treat a clear dot as a statement about one place on one day rather than about a coastline.

That is the same discipline this whole series applies to a stream gauge reading.

Does any of this look like a normal season?

Only the hunting pages do.

The commission publishes season dates prominently for hunting, with its own dedicated page.

Its fishing material is organised instead around recreational regulations, commercial regulations, fish identification, education and sites and forecasts.

That difference is the tell: the state thinks about hunting in dates and about fishing in places, species and conditions.

Freshwater and saltwater are separated at the top level, each with its own regulation set.

A visitor who wants a Florida season date is looking for a document the state does not really produce for anglers.

What does 347 cubic feet per second from a spring mean?

A large, steady, self-regulating river.

A spring run at that discharge is not a creek. It is a full-sized river, arriving already formed.

It does so without a catchment doing the work above it, which is why the survey's record for that station carries no drainage area at all.

The consequence for an angler is that this water is largely indifferent to whether it rained last week.

Rain-fed Florida rivers are the opposite, and the St Johns at 2,300 cubic feet per second reflects what the wet season has already delivered.

One of those two is plannable a month out and the other is not.

Is Florida one state for fishing purposes?

No, and the readings above cover only a fraction of it.

The four stations quoted sit between latitude 27.76 and 29.21, which is a narrow band in the middle of a very long peninsula.

South Florida, the Panhandle and the Atlantic coast each behave differently again, and none of them is described by the numbers above.

That is a general warning about this state rather than a gap in this page: a Florida average describes nowhere.

The useful unit here is the specific water, or at most the specific coast.

What is worth hiring somebody for here?

Reading the map, and knowing what it means locally.

A bloom map tells you where sampling found cells; it does not tell you what the fishing was like at the pass yesterday.

Somebody working that coast daily has both, and the gap between them is the whole value of a local operator in this state.

They also know which spring runs stay clear through a wet spell and which colour up.

And they know what a rising St Johns actually does to access rather than to temperature.

On a coast this long and this variable, that is worth considerably more than casting instruction.

How should fixed dates be handled?

By choosing water that ignores them.

A visitor with an immovable week is better served by the spring runs and the deeper coastal options than by anything shallow and rain-fed.

A visitor with flexible dates can afford to watch the daily map and move.

Most people are in the first category and plan as though they were in the second.

Building a trip around the stable water and treating the variable water as a bonus is the shape that survives contact with reality.

It also removes most of the disappointment that gets blamed on the weather afterwards.

Does a bloom stop the fishing everywhere?

The map is built to answer exactly that question, and its shape is the answer.

A rolling eight-day window of sample points is not a coastline-wide verdict, and it was never meant to be read as one.

Two access points a short drive apart can carry different results on the same day, which is why the dots are individually clickable.

That granularity is useful to a visitor precisely because it turns a blanket worry into a specific question about one place.

It also means somebody who checks once, a month out, has learned nothing that will still be true.

The check is worth doing twice: when you commit to a coast, and the evening before you fish it.

Everything else about a Florida trip is more forgiving than that one habit.

What does the wet season do to the freshwater?

Raises it, colours it and moves the fish.

The St Johns was carrying 2,300 cubic feet per second off 3,066 square miles that afternoon, which is a substantial volume for a river with almost no gradient.

A gauge datum of negative 0.09 feet tells you why that water moves slowly and spreads sideways rather than cutting down.

Rain in a flat basin fills a floodplain instead of producing a spate, and the fishing responds to that differently again.

Access is usually the first thing to change, before anything about the fish does.

Is the identification problem real here?

A visitor who cannot confidently name what is in the net cannot know which limit applies to it.

What does a first Florida trip usually get wrong?

Treating the state as one destination.

The peninsula is long enough that a week spent moving down it is a week spent driving.

Anglers arrive with a list containing a flats species, an offshore species and a freshwater species, and try to do all three.

Each of those sits on a different coast or a different water type, and each rewards a full day rather than a morning.

Choosing one and doing it properly is the version that produces a reason to come back.

It is also the version where local knowledge compounds instead of resetting every day.

That the northernmost of three Gulf stations was the warmest, at 89.2 degrees Fahrenheit.

That the state maps a single-celled organism daily at 5 p.m. on an eight-day rolling window.

That it maintains a research centre and a task force for that organism alone.

And that its own fishing pages carry no season dates while its hunting pages do.
