At quarter past four on a July afternoon, one Georgia river was flowing backwards. The survey's discharge reading at the coast was negative 230,000 cubic feet per second while the tide climbed three feet in two and a half hours. Two hundred miles inland the same state held a mountain river at 23.9 degrees Celsius. Fifty states, fifty different answers: the seasons-by-state hub.

Can a river really run backwards?
At a tidal station, routinely, and the sign tells you so.
The survey station on the Savannah River at Fort Pulaski reported a discharge of negative 230,000 cubic feet per second at 16:15 on 27 July 2026.
A negative discharge at a tidal gauge means water moving upstream rather than down.
The NOAA station at the same place recorded the water level rising from 2.051 feet at 14:00 to 5.217 feet at 16:24, so the tide was flooding through that whole window.
The gauge sits at an elevation of 0.0 feet, which is the only honest datum for that spot.
A quarter of a million cubic feet per second running the wrong way is not an anomaly here; it is what a large estuary does twice a day.
An angler planning around that water is planning around a direction as much as a level.
What does that mean for a coastal day?
That the useful unit of time is a couple of hours.
Water rose over three feet in the two and a half hours quoted, and everything about where fish sit and how you reach them moved with it.
Two anglers at the same landing three hours apart are fishing water travelling in opposite directions.
No monthly calendar can describe that, and no seasonal chart tries.
What matters is which part of the cycle you booked and whether your access point works at that stage.
That is knowledge held locally and daily rather than published annually.

And the mountains, on the same afternoon?
Seven degrees cooler and four hundred times smaller.
The Chattooga River at Burrells Ford, gauged at 2,050 feet with 46.7 square miles behind it, read 23.9 degrees Celsius at 53.6 cubic feet per second.
That is a wadeable mountain river at a temperature trout can live in, in the last week of July, in the Deep South.
The Savannah at the coast was 7.3 degrees warmer at the same time.
Between them sits Atlanta, where the South River at Bouldercrest Road read 27.2 degrees at 28.9 cubic feet per second from 753 feet.
Three fisheries, one state, one afternoon, and a spread of 7.3 degrees Celsius over about 2,050 feet of descent.
Why does a small mountain river stay that cool?
Shade, elevation and a short distance from its source.
A catchment of 46.7 square miles in forested mountains delivers water that has not travelled far or sat in the sun.
Fifty-three cubic feet per second is a modest flow, which cuts both ways: it cools easily and it also warms easily once the canopy opens.
That is why Georgia's coldwater fishing is concentrated in a corner of the state rather than spread across it.
It is also why the fishable window on those creeks narrows through the summer and moves upstream.
Reading the gauge on the specific creek beats any statewide summary, and it costs nothing.

What was the water doing in the city?
Running warm, small and urban.
The South River station at Bouldercrest Road drains 41.4 square miles and sits at 753.24 feet.
Its 28.9 cubic feet per second is a similar flow to the mountain river, from a similar-sized catchment, at 3.3 degrees warmer.
The difference between those two is not size, it is what the land upstream is covered in.
An urban catchment sheds warm water off hard surfaces and holds less shade over the channel.
That comparison is worth keeping in mind anywhere in this series where two similar rivers behave differently.
Drainage area alone never explains a temperature; land cover and elevation do most of the work.
Does the state publish a season at all?
It publishes one book, and the title is the tell.
Georgia's wildlife division announced in late July 2026 that the 2026-2027 Georgia Hunting and Fishing Regulations and Seasons guide was available online and in print.
A combined hunting and fishing regulations volume, revised annually, is how this state answers the question.
Alongside it the division maintains trout fishing pages, hatcheries, education centres and a standing alerts and closures section.
The alerts section is the part a visitor should actually check, because it is the one that changes inside a season.
It also runs online training for aquatic nuisance species, which is a requirement question rather than a season question.

What does a trout programme in the south require?
Hatcheries, and the state runs them.
The division lists hatcheries among its properties alongside public fishing areas, ranges and education centres.
In a state where the coldwater habitat is a corner of the map, stocking is what makes a trout fishery available to most residents.
That produces the usual two-tier arrangement: stocked water with reliable fish, and wild water that is harder and more seasonal.
A visitor should decide which of the two they came for before choosing where to go.
The wild option is the one that closes down first in a hot summer.
Choosing an operator is largely a matter of finding somebody who fishes the one you want.
How far apart are these fisheries?
About three degrees of latitude, and a different climate.
The Burrells Ford gauge sits at latitude 34.97 and Fort Pulaski at 32.04.
That is roughly 200 miles as the crow flies, with 2,050 feet of elevation change and a coastline at one end.
A week spent trying to fish both ends is a week spent on the interstate.
Georgia rewards picking an end and staying there, which is true of most large states in this series but unusually true here.
The middle of the state is a third option again, and the Atlanta reading is a fair sample of it.

Is the coast warmer than the sea?
Almost exactly matched, which is the estuary's doing.
The NOAA station at Fort Pulaski recorded water at 88.0 degrees Fahrenheit and air at 85.3 at 16:24 that afternoon.
Eighty-eight Fahrenheit is about 31.1 Celsius, against the survey's 31.2 at the river station in the same place.
Two agencies, two instruments, two scales, and effectively the same number.
That agreement is a reminder that the mouth of a river on a flooding tide is mostly seawater by then.
Which is why the coastal fishery here behaves like a marine one rather than a riverine one.
The species you can reasonably expect follow from that rather than from the river's name.
How do you read a tidal gauge at all?
By treating the sign and the trend as the data.
On a normal river, discharge is a single positive number and larger means more water.
On a tidal river the same field carries a direction, and the number swings from a large negative to a large positive and back twice a day.
A single reading therefore tells you almost nothing without the two either side of it.
Pairing the survey's discharge with a tide station's water level, as this page does, is the cheap way to establish which half of the cycle you are looking at.
Both records are free, both update continuously, and neither requires an account.
Once you have done it once for your landing, the pattern repeats and the check takes seconds.
Does the same logic reach up the river?
Further than most visitors expect.
Tidal influence on a coastal plain river extends well beyond the point at which the water tastes of salt.
That means access points a long way inland can still rise and fall on a cycle rather than on rainfall.
An angler who assumes a river is riverine because it is thirty miles from the sea can be caught out by a ramp that floods on a schedule.
The survey's station records make the distinction visible, since a tidal station reports a signed discharge and an inland one does not.
Checking which kind of station is nearest your access point answers the question in about ten seconds.
It is a small piece of homework that removes a whole class of surprise.
What changes between the stocked and the wild water?
Reliability, difficulty and how long the window stays open.
Stocked water carries fish of known size, placed recently, and fishes best in the weeks after delivery.
Wild water in the same mountains holds fewer, warier fish and depends entirely on the creek staying cool.
At 23.9 degrees Celsius on a July afternoon the Chattooga reading is at the upper end of what a wild trout population tolerates comfortably.
That is not a claim about any particular creek; it is the reason the wild fishing here contracts in high summer while the stocked fishing does not.
A visitor chasing wild fish in July should be looking higher and smaller, and should be reading gauges rather than calendars.

What does an annually revised rulebook mean in practice?
That anything written about the rules ages fast.
A combined volume reissued every year is a strong signal that the details move.
Limits, lengths and water-specific provisions are the parts most likely to change between editions.
Anything a visitor read on a forum two seasons ago is therefore a lead rather than an answer.

Is the middle of the state worth a day?

Warm-water fishing on rivers and reservoirs is what that produces, and it is available in exactly the weeks the mountain creeks are struggling.
For a visitor with a fixed July week, the middle of the state is the option that is actually in season.
It is also the one with the shortest drive from an airport, which matters more than most planning admits.
Treating it as the fallback rather than the plan is a common and avoidable mistake.

What is worth paying somebody for in Georgia?
Tide reading on the coast, and creek selection in the mountains.
On the coast the product is knowing which two hours at which landing, and that changes daily.
In the mountains the product is knowing which creek is still holding temperature this week and which has gone over.
In both cases the useful knowledge expires quickly, which is exactly the sort a visitor cannot build in advance.
What does not expire is access and the shape of the water, and that is available free on a map.
Paying for the perishable knowledge and doing the durable research yourself is the efficient split.

In the north that means a stocked river and a wild creek, so a hot afternoon has somewhere to go.

It is a bigger state than its shape on a map suggests.

Pick the north or the coast and build the whole trip there, because they are two holidays rather than two days.
In the north, decide between stocked and wild water and read the gauge for the specific creek before travelling.
On the coast, get the tide for your landing and treat the stage as the thing you are booking.
