There is a gauging station on the Waccamaw River near Pawleys Island whose recorded altitude is minus 4.50 feet. It publishes a water temperature and a stage height and nothing else: no drainage area, no streamflow. That is not a fault. In water that sits below sea level and reverses direction twice a day, the question "how much is flowing past" has no single answer, and the survey does not pretend otherwise. South Carolina's low country is where the measurements this series relies on start to break down, and understanding why is more useful than any calendar. The rest of the country is worked through the same way.

A station below sea level, publishing no flow

Minus 4.50 feet, a stage of 5.98, a temperature of 31.0 °C, and no discharge figure at all.

The Waccamaw near Pawleys Island is the only station in this series so far with a negative recorded altitude. It also carries no drainage area in the survey's site record, which every inland station on every other page has carried.

Both omissions describe the same condition. A tidal reach does not drain a catchment in the way an inland river does; water arrives from upstream and from the sea in alternation, and the net movement over a day can be close to nothing while a great deal of water passes in both directions.

So the survey publishes what it can measure honestly, a level and a temperature, and declines the number that would be misleading. A visitor should read that absence as information: on this reach, planning from a flow figure is not available, and tide and wind take its place.

The Waccamaw upstream still had a flow, and it was tiny

1,110 square miles produced 31.3 cubic feet per second at 32.0 °C.

At Longs, still above the tidal reach, the Waccamaw does carry a drainage area and a discharge. The yield works out at about 0.028 cubic feet per second per square mile, among the lowest figures anywhere in this series.

That is characteristic of a coastal-plain blackwater river in late July. The catchment is flat, sandy and swampy, it holds very little head, and by high summer most of what it can deliver has already gone.

Thirty-two degrees Celsius is 89.6 Fahrenheit, and it is the warmest reading on this page including the ocean. A wide, dark, shallow river with almost nothing moving through it will do that, and the darkness is part of the mechanism: tannin-stained water absorbs sunlight rather than reflecting it.

Five of the state's coastal gauges measure a canal

The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway is gauged at Socastee, Briarcliffe Acres, a golf course, an airport and a crossroads.

Those are station names, not descriptions invented here: the Intracoastal Waterway at Highway 544 at Socastee, at Briarcliffe Acres, at Myrtlewood Golf Course, at Grand Strand Airport, and at Highway 9 at Nixons Crossroads.

The waterway is a constructed channel, so none of those stations publishes a drainage area either. There is no catchment behind a canal; there is a route.

For anyone reading the state's water data that is worth registering before drawing conclusions. A dense cluster of stations along this coast is not a dense cluster of rivers. It is a navigation channel being monitored, and the numbers coming off it describe a managed waterway rather than a natural drainage.

One of those sensors last reported in 2009

The golf course station returns a streamflow of 3,460 cubic feet per second, dated 1 October 2009.

Its water temperature was current to the evening, at 30.9 degrees Celsius. Its discharge figure is seventeen years old and comes back in the same response, in the same format, with no visible distinction.

Quoting it would have suggested that the waterway beside Myrtle Beach was moving a hundred times the water of the Waccamaw upstream. The only thing preventing that was reading the date.

This is the second-oldest value this series has encountered, and it sits alongside a live sensor at the same station. As everywhere else, the check belongs on each individual reading rather than on the station as a whole.

The cold water from North Carolina does not arrive

The Catawba read 11.4 °C below a dam in North Carolina and 28.4 °C by the time it reached South Carolina.

The Catawba below Lake Wylie Dam at Fewell Island drains 3,020 square miles at 487.25 feet and was carrying 929 cubic feet per second. That is a yield of about 0.31, healthy for the region, and its temperature was 28.4 degrees.

Upstream in North Carolina the same river was 11.4 degrees immediately below Lake James on the same afternoon, and 26.4 below the next dam down. By the time it crosses into South Carolina it has passed through the whole chain of reservoirs and the manufactured cold has been entirely spent.

That is the single most useful cross-border fact on this page. A visitor who reads about the Catawba's coldwater fishing and drives to the South Carolina reach will find a different river. How far below an outlet the cold survives is the whole question, and it is not a question a season table addresses. Going with somebody versus going alone takes up what that kind of knowledge is worth.

The sea was cooler than the rivers, but only just

Springmaid Pier read 85.6 °F in the water and 83.1 °F in the air.

Converted, Springmaid Pier's 85.6 Fahrenheit is 29.8 Celsius, which puts the ocean below all three coastal freshwater stations and above the Catawba inland. Air over the pier was 83.1, so the water was running warmer than the air above it.

Water sitting above air temperature is the late-summer signature: the ocean is now shedding heat rather than gaining it. On this coast that state persists well into autumn, which is why the good saltwater fishing here runs later in the year than a visitor from the north expects.

What it does not offer is relief from a hot week. At nearly 30 degrees Celsius the ocean is not a cool alternative to the rivers; it is a slightly less hot one with a completely different set of fish in it. Timing an inshore booking deals with the end of the year that actually rewards a visit.

The state's marine effort is mostly restoration and research

Oyster restoration, artificial reefs, tagging, stocking research and an estuarine reserve.

The department's marine division organises itself around habitat and research rather than around angling regulation. Its programmes include oyster restoration and enhancement, artificial reefs, a marine game fish tagging programme, a marine stocking research programme, an aquatic nuisance species programme and an abandoned crab trap effort.

Behind those sit the Marine Resources Research Institute, the Waddell Mariculture Center, a southeastern regional taxonomic centre and in-water sea turtle research, plus the ACE Basin National Estuarine Research Reserve and a state estuarine and coastal assessment.

Two entries matter directly to a visitor. State fish consumption guidance is published alongside the rest, and shellfish has its own section with its own rules. Advisories of that sort are revised through the season, so pull the latest ones for whichever species and water you have in mind.

What the artificial reef programme tells a visitor

Structure here is largely put there on purpose.

A coastline of sand and mud offers very little natural hard bottom, so the state builds it. An artificial reef programme prominent enough to head the department's habitat list is a signal about what the offshore fishing actually depends on.

The same logic runs through the oyster restoration work inshore. Oyster reef is the structure that holds an estuarine fishery together, and a state running a named restoration programme is telling you that the resource needed rebuilding.

For planning, that means the productive spots on this coast are often published locations rather than secrets, and it means the inshore fishing is tied to habitat that people are actively maintaining. Neither of those is obvious from a map.

Two Waccamaw stations, and only one of them is a river

Longs at 4.22 feet publishes everything; Pawleys Island at minus 4.50 publishes half.

The two sit on the same named river about forty miles apart, and the survey treats them as different kinds of object. The upper one has a catchment, a discharge and a stage. The lower one has a stage and a temperature.

Between those two points the river stops being a drainage and becomes an arm of the sea that happens to carry fresh water at certain states of the tide. There is no line on any map marking where that happens, and the change is gradual rather than sudden.

What a visitor can do about it is straightforward. If your reach has a published discharge, plan from it. If it does not, the survey is telling you to plan from the tide instead, and the absence of the number is the instruction.

Four point two two feet is the working elevation of this coast

Longs sits at 4.22 feet; the golf course station at 12.07.

Set against the Catawba station inland at 487.25 feet, the coastal plain here is effectively flat. There is no elevation available as a lever, which removes the mechanism that produced the cold water in most of the other states in this series.

That leaves depth, shade and the ocean's thermal mass, and on this coast the first two barely exist. The blackwater rivers are shallow and largely unshaded, and the estuaries are shallower still.

The practical consequence is that in high summer nothing in the low country is cool, and planning around cool water is not an option. Planning around tide, structure and the time of day is, and that is what the local pattern of fishing reflects.

So what does a season mean in the low country?

A tide table, a consumption advisory and a migration, in roughly that order.

On the tidal reaches, where a station cannot even publish a flow figure, the daily cycle is the organising fact. A stage of 5.98 feet at six in the evening tells you where in that cycle you are and nothing about volume.

Above the tide, the blackwater rivers run hot and thin through the summer and come alive in the cooler months, and their season is genuinely weather-driven rather than dated.

Offshore and inshore in salt water, the year runs on migration and on water temperature that lags the air by weeks. A state whose ocean was warmer than its air on the twenty-seventh of July has an autumn that arrives late and stays good.

What people who fish here do in late July

They fish the tide, not the clock, and they mostly fish salt.

Somebody working this coast through a summer plans around the tide stage rather than around sunrise, because on water this shallow the movement of water is what turns fish on and off.

They largely leave the blackwater rivers alone in the hottest weeks. A river at 32 degrees Celsius carrying thirty cubic feet per second off eleven hundred square miles is not a productive proposition, and it will be a different river in October.

They also know which reefs and which oyster beds are worth the run, most of which are published if you know where to look. Somebody working these reefs weekly has that mapped already; the piece on vetting a charter covers how to find them.

What visitors misread about this state

They expect a river to behave like a river, and near the coast it does not.

A negative station elevation, no drainage area and no published discharge are three ways of saying the same thing: this is tidal water wearing a river's name. Planning it from an upstream flow figure will not work.

The second misreading is the Catawba. Its reputation is built on cold water released from North Carolina reservoirs, and at 28.4 degrees the South Carolina reach is a warmwater river with a coldwater river's name.

The third is timing. Summer is the obvious time to visit a southern coast and it is not the best one; the water is warmest, the rivers are thinnest and the fishing improves markedly later. Heat is the constraint to design a family day around here, which the article on fishing with children takes seriously.

Building a week around the tide instead of the calendar

Pick salt water, pick a tide stage, and let the dates follow.

For a summer trip, the coast is the answer and the inland rivers are a curiosity. Choose whether you are fishing the estuary, the surf or offshore, because those are three different days with three different weather thresholds.

Then build around the tide rather than around a start time. On water this shallow the difference between a good and a poor day is often two hours of timing, and tide predictions are published years ahead.

If the trip can move, move it to the autumn. The ocean holds its heat, the rivers recover, and the crowding drops. Booking against an autumn window rather than a summer one is covered in the timing article.

Three checks before driving

Tide first, because on this coast it is the organising variable and it is knowable months ahead.

The states either side of this one

One sends South Carolina its most famous river; the others share its coast.

North, North Carolina holds the upper Catawba and the reservoir chain that makes its coldwater fishing possible, and reading that page explains exactly what has been lost by the time the river arrives here.

South, Georgia shares the same low-country geology and the same tidal-measurement problem. Further down, Florida takes the pattern to its conclusion, with almost no elevation at all.

Season dates, size and creel limits, licence requirements, consumption advisories and shellfish closures are all the department's to publish and none appear above. On a coast where the binding constraints are tide and advisory, the dates are not where a trip is decided.

The Waccamaw near Pawleys Island appears without a flow figure because the survey publishes none for it, and without a drainage area for the same reason. That is the station's honest record, not an omission made here.

The Intracoastal Waterway station's discharge value of 3,460 cubic feet per second is dated 1 October 2009 and is quoted only to make the point about timestamps. It is not a current figure and should not be treated as one.

The comparison with the Catawba's North Carolina readings uses figures taken the same afternoon at stations in that state. Release schedules differ daily, so the size of the gap is not fixed.

Summer is the obvious time to visit a southern coast and it is the worst of it: the ocean is at its warmest, the blackwater rivers are hot and thin, and there is no elevation anywhere on the coastal plain to escape to. The rivers recover in the cooler months, the ocean holds its heat well into autumn, and the crowding drops. If the trip can move, move it.
