Fishing Seasons in South Dakota: A Trip-Planning Guide

On 27 July 2026 there was exactly one live water temperature published for the whole of South Dakota. Three stations in the state are equipped to measure it. One returned a value stamped November 2019. One returned the survey's no-data code. The third, on the Cheyenne River at Red Shirt, read 29.8 degrees Celsius on a river draining 10,259 square miles and carrying 46.4 cubic feet per second. That is the entire published answer to how warm this state's water is, and a visitor who plans from published data needs to know that before anything else. The rest of the country is worked through the same way.

One usable temperature in seventy-seven thousand square miles
Three stations measure it. Two were not reporting.
Rapid Creek above the water reclamation facility near Rapid City returned 3.2 degrees Celsius, stamped 22 November 2019, which is nearly seven years old and obviously a late-autumn reading. The Little White River near Vetal returned minus 999999, the survey's code for no data, stamped October 2025.
Both stations were reporting flow and stage live to that afternoon: 25.2 and 60.2 cubic feet per second respectively. They are working stations with dead temperature sensors, which is the pattern this series has found everywhere.
What is different here is the denominator. In most states a couple of failed sensors leave a dozen working ones. In South Dakota they leave one, and that one sits in the badlands on a river most visitors will never fish. Anybody planning around water temperature in this state is planning around an inference.
What the one working sensor said
29.8 °C, on a river draining 10,259 square miles and carrying 46.4 ft³/s.
The Cheyenne at Red Shirt sits at 2,653.21 feet in the badlands south of the Black Hills. Work its flow against its catchment and you get roughly 0.0045 cubic feet a second out of each square mile. Very few readings in this whole series sit that low, and for semi-arid plains country at the end of July it is entirely normal.
Its gauge height was 9.37 feet, which on a river carrying forty-six cubic feet per second tells you the channel is deeply incised. Badlands rivers cut down rather than spreading out, so a stage figure that would mean flood elsewhere means almost nothing here.
Twenty-nine point eight degrees is 85.6 Fahrenheit, and it is what a thin river in open country does at the end of July. The useful conclusion is not about the Cheyenne specifically; it is that the plains rivers in this state are hot and empty in high summer, and the fishing is elsewhere.
The state publishes a document explaining why there is no closed season

Most states in this series answer the season question with dates. South Dakota has published an explanation of why it does not close its most important fishery in spring, which is a considerably more interesting document than a table.
What it does regulate is the take. The walleye daily limit is four, of which only one may be twenty inches or longer, and that limit is a combination across sauger, saugeye and walleye rather than a separate allowance for each. The possession limit is eight. Several lakes carry their own length regulations on top.
So the management lever here is size and number rather than timing. A visitor asking when the season opens is asking a question this state has deliberately declined to answer that way, and the size structure of the limit is where the actual conservation logic sits.
Where you may fish is genuinely contested

South Dakota maintains a whole body of material on nonmeandered waters: a current closures map, frequently asked questions, marking requirements for signs, an open waters compromise, a petition form to restrict recreational use on section 8 lakes, a progress update, navigation lane requests and a lakeshore toolkit.
The underlying situation is that water has spread onto private land, and whether the public may fish that water has been worked out through legislation and negotiation rather than settled by tradition. Landowners can petition to restrict use; signs have to meet marking requirements; a map shows what is currently closed.
For a visitor this is more consequential than any date. A lake that was open last year may be closed now, and the map rather than the calendar is the document that will tell you. Access rules of this kind get revised, so check the current closures position before you travel.
A rolling fourteen-day stocking feed
The department publishes fish stockings from the last 14 days.
Not an annual schedule and not a summary: a rolling record of what has gone into which water in the past fortnight. In a state where much of the fishing is on reservoirs and managed lakes, that is directly actionable in a way a season table is not.
Alongside it sit fish surveys, reports and maps, a list of areas closed to fishing, public water access information, accessible fishing areas and a tournament application process.
Four hatcheries feed the programme: Blue Dog, Cleghorn Springs, McNenny and Whitlock Bay. Two of those names, Cleghorn Springs and McNenny, sit in the Black Hills, which is the part of the state where coldwater fish can actually be held.
Border waters and deep water angling are separate categories
Both appear as their own regulation headings.
Border waters get their own rules because South Dakota shares major water with several neighbours, most obviously the Missouri River reservoir system and the lakes along its eastern edge. Which state's licence applies where is a question with a published answer rather than an obvious one.
Deep water angling gets its own heading because on a deep reservoir a fish brought up quickly from depth suffers barotrauma and cannot be released successfully. Regulating that as a distinct activity is an acknowledgement that catch and release does not work below a certain depth.
Both categories tell you the same thing about this state: the fishing is substantially on big impounded water shared with other jurisdictions, and the rules have been built around that rather than around rivers. Whether that argues for hiring somebody who knows a specific reservoir is the calculation in what a hired day actually buys.
Twenty-two game species, and four of them are trout
Rainbow, brown, brook and lake trout appear alongside walleye, sauger and paddlefish.
The department's game species list runs from walleye and sauger through five kinds of sunfish to muskellunge, paddlefish and chinook salmon. Twenty-two entries is a wide list for a plains state.
Four are trout and one is a salmon, and all five depend on the Black Hills or on deep reservoir water. Cleghorn Springs and McNenny hatcheries sit in that corner for exactly that reason.
The research list points the same way, with studies on walleye and sauger movement in Lewis and Clark Lake, walleye hooking mortality during the ice fishing season, walleye genetics and the value of wetlands for walleyes. A department that has published on ice fishing mortality is a department managing a genuine winter fishery.
Both live stations sit under the same office
Rapid City covers the Black Hills and the badlands, with one radar for both.
The national forecast service places the Cheyenne gauge at Red Shirt in grid square 107 by 39, forecast zone SDZ042, referenced to Fairburn. The Rapid Creek gauge falls in grid 101 by 55, zone SDZ031, referenced to Green Valley. Both belong to the Rapid City office and both take radar coverage from KUDX.
The Black Hills rise sharply out of the plains, so those two grid squares describe quite different weather despite sitting fifty miles apart. The separate zones carry that difference.
What no forecast product covers is the eastern two-thirds of the state, where the reservoirs are, from these stations. If your trip is on the Missouri River lakes, neither gauge on this page is relevant to it, and that gap is worth naming rather than glossing over.
Three hundred and fifty feet of relief, and it changes everything
Rapid Creek sits at 3,003.24 feet, the Cheyenne at 2,653.21.
Three hundred and fifty feet is not much on paper, and in this corner of the state it marks the edge of the Black Hills. Above that line the drainages are forested, steep and cold enough to hold trout; below it they are badlands and prairie.
The flow figures make the same point from another direction. Rapid Creek was carrying 25.2 cubic feet per second off 449.39 square miles, a yield of about 0.056. The Cheyenne managed 0.0045 off a catchment twenty-three times larger. The small hill stream was producing more than twelve times the water per unit of ground.
That ratio is the whole reason two of the state's four hatcheries sit in the Black Hills. The trout are there because the water is there, and the water is there because a few hundred feet of elevation changes what the ground does with rainfall.
An incised channel makes stage almost meaningless
9.37 feet of gauge height on 46.4 cubic feet per second.
On most rivers in this series a stage approaching ten feet would mean high water. On the Cheyenne at Red Shirt it accompanies a flow that would barely cover a streambed elsewhere.
Badlands rivers cut vertically into soft rock rather than spreading across a floodplain, so the channel is narrow and deep and the water surface sits well above whatever datum the gauge was set against. A modest volume in a deep slot produces a large-looking number.
The rule this series keeps arriving at applies with unusual force here. Stage is comparable only against itself at one station over time; the figure that lets you compare two rivers is discharge in cubic feet per second, and on this river it is the only one worth reading.
So what does a season mean in South Dakota?
A size limit, an access map and a stocking feed, in that order.
The state has told you plainly that it does not close its headline fishery in spring, and it has published its reasoning. What it manages instead is how many fish and how big, with a four-fish walleye limit allowing only one over twenty inches.
Where you may fish is the second question and in this state it is a live one, with a closures map that changes and a petition process behind it.
What is in the water is the third, and the fourteen-day stocking feed answers it more precisely than any calendar could. Between those three, dates barely enter into the planning at all.
What people here do in the last week of July
They are on the reservoirs, and they are not on the plains rivers.
Anybody fishing this state through a summer is on the Missouri River lakes or in the Black Hills. A prairie river at 29.8 degrees Celsius carrying forty-six cubic feet per second off ten thousand square miles is not where anybody chooses to be in late July.
On the reservoirs they work depth, which is why deep water angling has its own rules, and they pay attention to the size structure of what they are catching because the limit is built around it.

What visitors misjudge here
They expect data, and they expect a season.
One live water temperature statewide is a genuinely unusual situation, and a visitor accustomed to checking conditions before a trip will find far less to check here than almost anywhere else in this series.
The second surprise is the absence of a spring closure on walleye, which runs against the instinct of anglers from states that close for spawning. The department has published its reasoning and it is worth reading rather than assuming an oversight.
The third is access. Nonmeandered water is a South Dakota-specific arrangement and the map genuinely changes. With children in the car, the long drives between the Black Hills and the eastern lakes are the thing to design around, and the article on fishing with children takes that seriously.
Choosing between the hills and the big water
Two destinations, four hours apart, with almost nothing in common.
The Black Hills give you trout, small water and elevation. The Missouri River reservoirs give you walleye, big open water and depth. Those are the two trips available, and combining them in a single week costs most of a day in the car each way.
For a summer visit, the reservoirs are the stronger option, because depth substitutes for the altitude the eastern half of the state does not have.

Three things to open before driving
The closures map, the stocking feed, and the flow at whichever river you had in mind.
The closures map first. It is the only document that can strike a named lake off your list, and no other source carries the information.
The fourteen-day stocking record second, since it is the most current statement available about what is actually in a given lake.

The three states that share this water
Border waters are a regulation category here for a reason.
North, North Dakota shares the Missouri River reservoir chain and the same two-season year, and its own published material splits fishing into open water and ice for the same reasons.
South, Nebraska shares the lower Missouri and the same plains hydrology, with a groundwater system South Dakota largely lacks. East, Minnesota shares the border lakes along the eastern edge and a very different abundance of water.
