Fishing Seasons in Louisiana: A Trip-Planning Guide

Just over 1.1 million square miles of North America drains past a single gauge at Baton Rouge, and that gauge sits at zero feet. Most of the interior states in this series eventually send their water through here. How much water is actually arriving?
Four hundred and eleven thousand cubic feet per second.
On the afternoon of 27 July 2026 the Mississippi River at Baton Rouge was moving 411,000 cubic feet per second at 31.6 degrees Celsius, with the gauge on 15.76 feet.
The catchment above that station is recorded at 1,125,810 square miles.
The Lower Atchafalaya at Morgan City was carrying another 119,000 cubic feet per second at 31.4 degrees, with the gauge on 3.15 feet.
Between them that is over half a million cubic feet per second leaving the continent through one state.
For scale, the largest flow measured anywhere else in this series was 214,000, and most states were producing numbers in the hundreds.
Louisiana does not have a water supply problem. It has a water arrival problem.
Why does that make the fishing complicated?
Because the categories stop working.
The state's fisheries department publishes something almost no other state needs: a page defining the saltwater and freshwater lines, and the state and federal ones.
In most places a river is fresh and the sea is salt and nobody has to draw that on a map.
Here the water is so thoroughly mixed, and the land so thoroughly interleaved with it, that the boundary has to be declared.
Which side of that line you are standing on decides which licence you need, which limits apply and which permits you must hold.
An angler can move between two legal regimes in a single day's fishing without noticing the transition.
Check the current boundary position and the licence it implies with the department before you fish, because none of it appears here.
What permits attach to which side?
Two that visitors routinely miss, and one is free.
The department records that a Recreational Offshore Landing Permit is required to possess tunas, billfish, swordfish, amberjacks, snappers, groupers, hinds, cobia, wahoo, gray triggerfish and dolphinfish in Louisiana waters.
Recreational fishermen need it in addition to their licences, with exceptions for those under 18 and those on a paid for-hire charter trip.
A separate bowfishing permit is required for anglers aged 18 and over taking saltwater recreational fish with bowfishing gear south of the designated saltwater line.
That permit is free of charge, and again does not apply to under-18s or to charter clients.
Notice that both exemptions turn on being a client on a for-hire trip, which is a real practical difference between booking and going alone.
Neither permit has anything to do with a season, and both can stop a day.
How does the state know what is being caught?
It runs its own survey programme.
The department operates a recreational saltwater landings data collection programme, using a combination of data collected dockside and through phone and email surveys.
Those estimates of recreational saltwater harvest are what the department relies on to manage the fishery.
That matters to a visitor for one reason: management decisions here respond to measured landings rather than to a fixed calendar.
Which is why the saltwater rules in this state can change inside a year.
An angler planning around last season's limits is planning around a document that has moved.

What was the water doing?
Thirty-one degrees, top to bottom.
The Mississippi at Baton Rouge read 31.6 degrees Celsius and the Atchafalaya at Morgan City 31.4, on the same afternoon.
Barataria Pass at Grand Isle, a station recorded with a datum of negative 6.31 feet, had the gauge on 6.83 feet.
The NOAA station at Grand Isle, at latitude 29.2633 and longitude -89.9567, reported water at 86.7 degrees Fahrenheit and air at 90.0, with a water level of 0.177 at four o'clock.
Eighty-six point seven Fahrenheit is about 30.4 Celsius, so the sea was very slightly cooler than the two rivers.
A one degree spread across an entire state, from the biggest river on the continent to the open Gulf, is close to no spread at all.
So what actually varies here?
Salinity, water level and where the land is this year.
When temperature does nothing across a state, the variables that remain are the ones a visitor rarely thinks to check.
Salinity moves with river stage and with wind, and it moves the fish with it.
Water level in a marsh decides which ponds are reachable and which are not, and a strong wind changes it as much as a tide does.
The department's own boundary lines exist precisely because those things move.
An angler here should be watching river stage and wind rather than a thermometer.
That is a genuinely different reading habit from everywhere else in this series.
Why does salinity move the fish?
Because most inshore species have a band they prefer and will travel to find it.
A marsh is a gradient rather than a boundary: fresher at the top, saltier at the bottom, and the whole gradient slides back and forth.
A big river pushing hard drives that gradient seaward, and a sustained wind or a low river lets salt push back up.
Fish that sit in a particular part of that gradient move with it, which is why the same pond can be excellent one month and empty the next.
None of that is visible from a satellite image or a map, and none of it is seasonal in the ordinary sense.
It is the reason local operators talk about where the water is rather than about what time of year it is.
A visitor who learns that one idea has understood most of what makes this state different.
What does 411,000 cubic feet per second do downstream?
It sets the whole system's baseline.
Water arriving at that rate carries sediment, nutrients and fresh water into a coastal system that is otherwise marine.
It is also why the Atchafalaya exists as a second outlet carrying another 119,000 cubic feet per second on the same day.
Two outlets sharing a continent's drainage produce two different coastal environments, and they fish differently.
The stage at Baton Rouge is therefore a piece of information about the coast, not only about the river.
Watching it in the fortnight before a trip is a habit that costs nothing and explains a great deal.
It is the single most useful gauge in this state for somebody fishing the salt.
Is the freshwater fishing an afterthought here?
Far from it, and the department gives it equal billing.
Its recreational pages split evenly between saltwater finfish, freshwater finfish and crawfish, and crab, oyster and shrimp.
Crawfish harvesting is described as a popular pastime rather than a curiosity, with its own licence and gear rules.
The freshwater side covers lakes, ponds, rivers, reservoirs, creeks and bayous, which is a wider list than most states can offer.
For a visitor the freshwater option is the one that is fishable when wind shuts the coast down.
Having one of each in the plan is the version of a Louisiana week that survives weather.

What should a first Louisiana trip avoid?
A fixed destination on a fixed date.
The single most common mistake here is naming a marsh months out and refusing to move off it.
Wind and river stage will decide which water is fishable in your week, and neither respects a booking.
Booking an operator rather than a place, and giving them two possible days rather than one, produces a far better trip.
Most of what visitors afterwards call bad luck was a decision made too early.
Somebody who has never fished a marsh should treat the first day as orientation rather than as the trip.

What does the department publish for planning?
A long list, and two items stand out.
Its fisheries management section carries artificial reefs, fish hatcheries, stock assessments, marine fishery management plans, freshwater waterbody management plans and a research laboratory.
Two entries are aimed squarely at people who do not know where to go: a where-should-I-fish page, and a stocked-pond finder.
Alongside them sit a tournament reporting project, a collaborative angler project on striped bass, and fishing workshops.
A visitor who reads the boundary page, the current regulations and the where-to-fish material has covered most of what can be prepared in advance.
What remains is local and daily, which is the part this state is famous for.
Choosing an operator is worth doing on the basis of which marsh they actually run.
Is there something unusual about eating the catch?
The state runs a programme for it.
Louisiana operates a catch-and-cook scheme giving fishermen and alligator hunters the opportunity to eat their own catch, prepared by a professional chef, within hours of coming off the water.
Retail food establishments wishing to take part apply for a free permit issued by the department, subject to rules, penalties, terms and conditions.
No other state in this series has been found operating anything comparable.
It is a small thing, and it tells you a great deal about how this state thinks about its fisheries.
For a visitor it turns an ordinary day into a different kind of evening.

Does the marsh behave like a river or a coast?
Neither, and that is why the boundary pages exist.
A gauge datum of negative 6.31 feet at Grand Isle and negative 1.31 at Morgan City describes country that is below the level of the water beside it.
In that landscape a channel is not obviously a river and a bay is not obviously the sea.
Tide, wind and river stage all move the water, and they do not move it in the same direction at the same time.
An angler used to reading either a river or a coast will find that half their assumptions transfer and the other half mislead.
That is the strongest argument anywhere in this series for a first day with somebody who runs that specific marsh.
Whether that day repays itself is set out separately, and it repays here more than most places.
How far ahead can any of this be planned?
The permits, yes. The water, no.
Licences, the offshore permit and the bowfishing permit are all knowable months in advance and should be sorted then.
Which marsh is fishable in a given week depends on wind and river stage in the days before, and no amount of early planning fixes it.
That argues for booking the operator early and letting them choose the water on the morning.
It also argues for a flexible week rather than a single fixed day.
Visitors who insist on a named destination on a named date are the ones who get the worst of this state.
Booking lead times are worth reading with that flexibility in mind.
What does a hired day actually buy in a marsh?
Navigation, first, and everything else second.
A marsh has no channel markers over most of its extent, and a wrong turn at low water is a long afternoon.
Local operators carry routes in their heads that no chart holds, and those routes change as the marsh does.
They also know where the salinity front sits this week, which is the single most important thing in an inshore day here.
And they hold the boat, which in shallow water of this kind is a specific and unusual tool.
None of that is available to a visitor with a rental and a phone.

Does the offshore fishery run on a different system again?
A third jurisdiction, and the state says so on the same page.
The boundary material covers state against federal waters as well as salt against fresh, which means three regimes rather than two.
Species like tuna, billfish and the deeper snappers and groupers sit largely under the federal side, which is why the state's own permit exists to record possession of them in Louisiana waters.
An angler running far offshore and returning to a Louisiana dock is therefore crossing lines in both directions during one trip.

How much of the planning is genuinely fixed?
The paperwork, and almost nothing else.
Licences and permits are stable, knowable and worth doing early, and they are the part visitors most often leave to the last minute.
Everything about the water is decided in the days before by wind, stage and salinity.
That inversion catches out people used to states where the water is predictable and the paperwork is trivial.
Getting it the right way round costs nothing and removes the two commonest failure modes at once.
It also means a Louisiana trip can be booked with more confidence than its reputation suggests, provided the destination stays open.
The flexible version is the one that works, and the operators here plan that way as a matter of course.
