Mississippi's fisheries page tells you twice how much water the state has, and the two answers do not match. One paragraph offers over 4,000 miles of streams and 282,000 acres of lakes and reservoirs. Another, further down the same page, offers 119 public lakes, 123,000 stream miles and 225,000 freshwater acres. Both are the department's own words, published together, and a visitor deciding whether this is a big fishing state or a modest one gets a different answer depending on which paragraph they happen to read. That is the honest starting condition here, and it is worth sitting with before you look at a calendar. The rest of this page is about what the water itself reported on one afternoon, which turns out to be a steadier guide than any inventory. The department publishes two different inventories of its own water

On one page, Mississippi describes both 4,000 miles of streams and 123,000 stream miles.

The freshwater section of the state's fishing and boating page opens by saying that opportunities abound in Mississippi with over 4,000 miles of streams and 282,000 acres of lakes and reservoirs. Scroll to the public waters programme lower on the same page and the description changes: 119 public lakes, 123,000 stream miles and 225,000 freshwater acres.

Those are not small discrepancies. One figure for stream mileage is thirty times the other. The acreage figures differ by 57,000 acres, which is larger than most reservoirs in the state.

Neither number is dishonest. They are almost certainly counting different things: one probably counts fishable or managed stream miles and the other counts every mapped watercourse in the state, and the acreage difference likely turns on whether reservoirs are inside or outside the definition. But the page does not say which is which, and a visitor has no way to tell from reading it.

Which of the two figures should a visitor actually plan on?

Neither. Plan on the specific water you can name, because inventory totals do not fish.

The temptation with a number like 123,000 stream miles is to assume abundance and turn up expecting to find water anywhere. The temptation with 4,000 is the reverse. Both temptations lead somewhere unhelpful, because the useful unit is never the state total. It is one named lake, one named stretch of river, and whether that particular water is in shape during the week you are here.

The department gives you the tools for exactly that. It publishes fishing reports from across the state, depth maps for its lakes, creel and size limits, and a searchable historical database of state records. Those are all specific-water instruments. The inventory paragraph is marketing copy that happens to sit above them.

This is a general lesson that this series keeps running into and it applies well beyond Mississippi. The question whether a guided day earns its cost almost always turns on the specific rather than the statewide, and so does everything upstream of it.

The whole state sits between 71 and 92 feet above sea level

Three gauges spread across Mississippi were recorded at 71.47, 86.10 and 92.03 feet.

The Leaf River station near New Augusta, in the southeast, has a recorded altitude of 71.47 feet. Bogue Phalia near Leland, in the Delta on the other side of the state, sits at 86.10. The Big Sunflower River at Sunflower, also Delta, is at 92.03.

Twenty-one feet separates the highest of those from the lowest, and they are on opposite sides of the state from each other. That is not a sampling artefact; it is what Mississippi is. Compare it with what the same measurement does in states this series has already walked through, where a single river can drop several thousand feet between two gauges within a day's drive.

Elevation is the single most reliable source of cold water in North American fishing. Water that has come down from height is colder than water that has not, and every mountain state's summer plan is built on that. Mississippi does not have the option. There is no altitude to run to.

What 31.6 degrees Celsius in a river actually means

88.9 °F in a river draining 2,542 square miles is not a heat spike; it is the condition.

The Leaf River near New Augusta read 31.6 degrees Celsius at a quarter to four in the afternoon on 27 July 2026, while carrying 1,450 cubic feet per second off a catchment of 2,542 square miles.

The size matters to how you read the temperature. A small stream heating up on a hot day is unremarkable, because a thin body of water in an open channel follows the air. A river moving fourteen hundred cubic feet per second has real thermal mass, and it does not reach 88.9 degrees Fahrenheit because of one warm afternoon. It reaches that because the whole catchment above it has been warm for weeks and there is nothing upstream cold enough to pull it back down.

Water at that temperature holds meaningfully less dissolved oxygen than cool water, and fish respond by moving, holding deeper where depth exists, or feeding in a narrow window at either end of the day. None of that means the fishing stops. It means the fishing relocates in time rather than in space.

The Gulf was warmer than the river, which inverts the usual logic

The NOAA station at the Bay Waveland Yacht Club, on the Mississippi coast, reported a water temperature of 90.0 degrees Fahrenheit at half past four on the afternoon of 27 July 2026, with an air temperature of 94.5 and a water level of 0.863 feet. The station is formally tidal, unlike the Great Lakes stations further north.

Ninety degrees is the warmest sea-surface reading anywhere in this series so far. It is warmer than the river inland, and that reverses a piece of received wisdom that visitors carry into most coastal states: that salt water is the cool option when the rivers go warm.

In the northeast it is. On this coast in late July it is not. The northern Gulf in high summer is a shallow, sun-loaded basin, and it behaves accordingly. The reason to fish salt water in a Mississippi July is not that it is cooler. It is that the fish there are adapted to those temperatures and the water is not going to run out.

How that changes what you book is worth its own reading, and what an inshore day costs is the practical end of it.

Two Delta rivers, and why their gauge heights disagree so violently

Bogue Phalia read 9.53 feet carrying 317 ft³/s; the Big Sunflower read 3.36 feet carrying 610.

Bogue Phalia near Leland drains 484 square miles and was moving 317 cubic feet per second, with a gauge height of 9.53 feet. The Big Sunflower River at Sunflower drains 767 square miles, was moving 610 cubic feet per second, and read a gauge height of 3.36 feet.

So the river with less than two-thirds the catchment and roughly half the flow was showing nearly three times the stage. Read naively, that says Bogue Phalia was the higher, fuller water. It says nothing of the kind.

Gauge height is measured from a datum chosen for that station. It might be a local zero set when the gauge was installed, it might be tied to an elevation reference, and it might sit at the bottom of a deep incised channel or partway up a shallow one. Two stations twenty miles apart in the same drainage can use references that have no relation to each other.

The practical rule is short and it holds in every state: streamflow in cubic feet per second is comparable between stations, and gauge height is not. If you are comparing two waters, use the flow figure. If you are watching one water over several days, the stage figure at that single station is useful, because it is at least being measured against itself.

Both Delta stations had temperature sensors that were not reporting

The most recent water temperature at one was from October 2024 and at the other from February 2025.

When you pull the current values for the Big Sunflower at Sunflower, a water temperature comes back: 20.7 degrees Celsius. It is dated 30 October 2024. Bogue Phalia returns 7.8 degrees, dated 14 February 2025. Both are perfectly plausible numbers, and both are historical.

This is the most common trap in reading river data and it is completely silent. The service returns the last value the sensor recorded, whenever that was. A sensor that failed eighteen months ago still hands you a reading, and nothing in the number itself announces that it is old. Only the timestamp does.

So the discipline is trivial and non-negotiable: read the timestamp on every value before you use it, and discard anything that is not from today. Applied here, that leaves Mississippi with exactly one live river temperature out of three, which is why this page leans on the Leaf River for its thermal picture and on flow alone for the Delta.

What the department actually gives you for choosing water

Fishing reports, lake depth maps, creel limits, a species guide and a searchable record database.

The fisheries side of the state's site is organised around a set of practical tools rather than around prose. There are public fishing lakes with fishing reports, creel limits and depth maps attached to each. There is a fish identification guide covering 39 common species. There is a searchable historical database of state fishing records, and a ramp and pier programme that builds, renovates and grants funding for public access.

The depth maps deserve particular attention in a state with no elevation. If altitude cannot give you cold water, depth is the only remaining physical refuge, and a depth map is how you find it in advance rather than by trolling around looking for it.

There is also a community fishing assistance programme aimed at lakes and ponds in urban settings, a pond assistance service covering liming, fertilising and stocking, an environmental programme that reviews permits, and a set of hatcheries. The boating rule that catches visitors out

Anyone born on or after 30 June 1980 must complete a boating education course to operate a boat on Mississippi public waterways.

The department states this plainly on its boating page, and it applies to public waterways in the state. It is a date-of-birth rule rather than a residency rule, which is the part that surprises people: being from somewhere else does not exempt you from it.

For most visitors this is irrelevant, because most visitors are not operating their own boat. It becomes relevant the moment somebody rents one, borrows one from family, or trailers one down. Worth knowing before rather than after.

It is also a useful illustration of how much of a state's fishing regulation has nothing to do with fish. Access, vessel operation, registration and education requirements all sit alongside creel limits in the same body of rules, and only one of those categories is what anglers think of as "the regulations". If you want a fuller sense of what changes hands when you book somebody else's boat instead, that question is treated directly in choosing an inshore operation.

So what is a season in Mississippi?

Mostly a set of conditions rather than a set of opening dates.

Northern states run on calendars because their water is genuinely unavailable for part of the year. Ice closes it, spawning closures protect it, and the season structure follows from that physical reality.

Mississippi's water does not shut. What changes across the year is temperature, oxygen, flow and what the fish are doing about all three. There are still rules, and they still have dates in them, and you still need to read them. But a visitor asking "when does it open" is asking a question shaped by a different geography.

The better question is what the year does to the water. Summer means a hot river with a narrow feeding window, a Gulf that is warmer than most people expect, and depth as the only physical refuge available. Autumn cools everything and widens the window. Winter is genuinely fishable here, which surprises visitors from further north. Spring brings both the most active fishing and the most variable flow.

What experienced anglers here do differently in July

They fish the ends of the day, and they choose depth or salt rather than hoping for cool.

Somebody who fishes this state through a full summer is not looking for cold water, because they know it does not exist. They are working with what does: the first two hours after light and the last two before dark, when the surface has had the least sun on it and the oxygen picture is at its best.

Between those windows they go deep if the water they are on has depth, or they go to the coast where the fish are built for 90-degree water. What they do not do is spend a July afternoon on a shallow inland flat expecting a river at 88.9 degrees Fahrenheit to behave like it does in April.

They also watch flow rather than stage, for the reason set out above, and they know which of their local gauges is actually reporting and which one has been handing back a 2024 number for a year and a half.

What surprises visitors about fishing here

That the sea is hotter than the river, and that winter is a serious season.

The temperature inversion is the first surprise and it upends a plan built elsewhere. People arrive assuming the coast is the cool escape and find a 90-degree Gulf.

The second is the calendar. Visitors from cold states treat winter as the off-season by reflex, because where they come from it is. Here the water stays open, the temperatures come down into a comfortable range for the fish, and a good deal of the best fishing of the year happens in months a northerner would not think to book.

The third is how flat it is, and how much that determines. A visitor who has fished a mountain state carries an instinct to drive uphill when it gets hot. In Mississippi that instinct has nowhere to go, and the substitute is depth, timing and salt. If you are bringing children into that heat, the practical end of it is covered in taking kids on a guided trip.

How to shape a first week here

Pick a half of the state, not the whole of it, and put one coastal day in.

Mississippi is long north to south and the Delta and the coast are entirely different propositions. Trying to do both in one week means most of the week is spent driving, and neither gets a fair run.

A workable shape for a summer visit is three or four days built around one region with a couple of named waters in it, plus one coastal day. The coastal day is not a change of scenery; it is a different fishery with different species and a different response to heat, and it insures the trip against an inland heatwave.

If you are coming in the cooler half of the year, the case for concentrating inland is much stronger, because the thing that pushes people to the coast in July is not operating. Timing the booking itself is a separate discipline and when to book an inshore trip covers it properly.

What to read before you commit to dates

The department's current fishing reports, the depth map for your candidate lake, and today's flow at your candidate river.

Those three take about twenty minutes between them and they answer most of what a visitor needs. The fishing reports tell you what is happening now rather than what happens in an average July. The depth map tells you whether the lake you are considering has anywhere for fish to go when the surface is at ninety.

The flow figure tells you whether the river is carrying water. Read it in cubic feet per second, check the timestamp, and ignore the gauge height unless you are watching the same station across several days.

What you cannot get from any of that is what the fish did last Tuesday on that particular bend, and that is the entire value proposition of somebody who is out there every week. The gap between publicly available data and local knowledge is wider in a state with this much undifferentiated water than it is in one where the good stretches are obvious from a map. What to bring on an inshore day is the last piece if you go that route.

Where to look next

The neighbouring states share the geography but not the structure.

Mississippi's Delta water and the flat country either side of it do not stop at a state line. Louisiana takes the same river system to the sea and ends up with a set of planning problems that are recognisably related but not identical, and the Louisiana guide works through them.

To the east, Alabama has a Gulf coast of its own but real elevation in its northern half, which gives it options Mississippi does not have. To the northwest, Arkansas is the sharpest contrast available: cold tailwater fishing in the same latitude band, made possible entirely by dams and topography.

Reading those three alongside this one is the fastest way to see what is regional and what is specifically Mississippi. And what an offshore day costs is worth a look if the coastal option interests you.

You will not find a date on this page. Not one opening day, not one closure, not one bag limit for any bayou or oxbow in the state.

That is deliberate, and here is what else is missing. There is no list of which lakes are fishing well, because that changes weekly and the department publishes reports that do. There is no ranking of the state's water, because the useful comparison is between two candidates you are actually considering, not across 119 public lakes. There is no tackle advice, because a page assembled from gauge readings and an agency's own text has no standing to give any.

The temperature figures here are single instrument samples taken at stated minutes on 27 July 2026. They describe that afternoon at those five locations and nothing else. Two of the Delta temperature sensors were returning values more than a year old and have been excluded rather than quoted.

And the two water inventories at the top are reported as the department published them, contradiction included. Resolving which one is right is not something this page can do from outside.
