Two of the three highest water yields this series has recorded anywhere in the country are on the Olympic Peninsula, and neither comes out of a spring. The Bogachiel River near Forks drains 111 square miles and was carrying 278 cubic feet per second on 27 July 2026. Set one against the other and each square mile of that catchment was delivering two and a half cubic feet a second, from rainfall alone. Fifty miles east, in the rain shadow on the other side of the same mountains, the Dungeness drains half again as much ground and delivers under a third as much per unit of it. One range, two climates, and a visitor who does not know which side they are booking has not started planning. The seasons index runs the same test on every other state.

Two and a half cubic feet per second, per square mile, from rain

Only one river in this series has produced a higher yield, and that one drains a volcanic aquifer.

The Bogachiel near Forks works out at roughly 2.51 on that measure. The Quinault at Quinault Lake, draining 264 square miles and carrying 517, came out at 1.96. Those are the second and third highest figures recorded anywhere across this whole series.

What makes them remarkable is that neither is spring-fed. In Oregon a yield of 4.54 came from Cascade volcanic rock storing snowmelt and releasing it through springs; here the mechanism is simply that an enormous amount of rain falls on these catchments and keeps falling.

For a visitor that has one clear consequence: the western Olympic rivers are the least likely water in the country to be low in late July. Most of this series has been an exercise in finding out which rivers still have water in them. On this coast that question barely arises.

The other side of the mountains is a different country

The Dungeness yielded 0.73, less than a third of the Bogachiel's rate.

The Dungeness near Sequim drains 156 square miles at 565.90 feet and was carrying 114 cubic feet per second. That is a perfectly healthy figure by the standards of most states in this series, and beside its neighbour on the wet side it looks thin.

The Olympic Mountains take the weather coming in off the Pacific and wring it out on the western slopes. What reaches the northeast corner of the peninsula has already lost most of its moisture, and Sequim sits in one of the driest pockets on the whole west coast north of California.

Fifty miles, one range, and a threefold difference in how much water the ground delivers. That is a larger contrast than most states in this series manage from end to end, and here it fits inside an afternoon's drive.

The rain shadow river was the colder one

Dungeness 13.5 °C, Bogachiel 16.6 °C.

The drier river was three degrees colder, which inverts what the yield figures would suggest and has a straightforward explanation: elevation and source. The Dungeness station sits at 565.90 feet against the Bogachiel's 169.26, and it drains high country on the northeastern flank of the range where snow and ice persist late.

The North Fork Skokomish below Staircase Rapids says the same thing more strongly. At 762.26 feet, the highest station here, it read 13.6 degrees on 52.1 cubic feet per second off 57.2 square miles.

So on this peninsula the two variables pull in opposite directions. The wet side gives you volume; the high and dry side gives you temperature. At 13.5 and 13.6 degrees, roughly 56 Fahrenheit, those two stations are among the coldest readings this series has taken outside Alaska. Which of the two you want depends on the species, and the argument for and against paying somebody turns on exactly that kind of call.

Ten feet of stage on 278 cubic feet per second

The Bogachiel's gauge reads far higher than its flow would suggest anywhere else.

Compare it with the other three: the Quinault at 2.10 feet on 517 cubic feet per second, the Skokomish at 2.87 on 52.1, the Dungeness at 2.45 on 114. The Bogachiel reads 10.08 feet on 278.

That is a deeply incised channel, cut by a river that carries an enormous amount of water in winter through soft ground and heavy forest. A rain-forest river in flood is a different object from the one you see in July, and the gauge datum reflects the range it has to cover.

The practical warning is worth stating plainly. On rivers that rise like this, a stage figure is not a comfort. Ten feet in late July on the Bogachiel is low water; the same station in December is measuring something else entirely, and the channel's shape is what makes that possible.

One of the four sensors has been dark since 2018

The Quinault at Quinault Lake last returned a water temperature in August 2018.

Its most recent value is 19.8 degrees Celsius, stamped 30 August 2018, which is eight years old. Its streamflow of 517 cubic feet per second and stage of 2.10 feet were both current to the afternoon.

This is the pattern this series has found in every state: a working station with one dead sensor, and no visible difference between the live values and the historic one in the response.

It matters more here than usual because the Quinault is the second-highest-yielding river on the page and would have been a useful temperature reading. What is quotable is its flow, and that is enough to establish the rain-forest point; the temperature is simply not available and is left out rather than guessed at.

Tribal fishing is a category of its own

The department lists it alongside recreational and commercial fishing.

Washington's fisheries pages carry tribal fishing as a peer heading next to fishing regulations, shellfishing regulations, commercial fishing and the rest. That placement reflects a co-management arrangement that shapes how the state's salmon and steelhead fisheries are set.

For a visiting angler the practical consequence is that seasons on many rivers are the product of a negotiation between more than one authority, and they are set closer to the season than a general regulation booklet would suggest.

The department also publishes fishing and stocking reports and a mobile application, and it maintains what it describes as hundreds of water access areas and dozens of wildlife areas. Rules on individual rivers here change within a season more often than in most states, so read the current regulations for the specific water before you travel.

What the state points visitors at

Lowland lakes, high lakes, marine areas and Puget Sound piers.

The department's places-to-go material sorts the state four ways, and the framing is worth noticing. Lowland lakes are described as offering some of the best fishing opportunities in the state. High lakes trout fishing is called, without hedging, one of Washington's premier recreational opportunities.

Marine areas get their own section, and so do Puget Sound fishing piers, which the department presents as a way into saltwater fishing without a boat. Public clam, mussel and oyster beaches are listed separately again, with harvest seasons and current Department of Health status attached.

Rivers, notably, are not one of the four headings. The state's own signposting puts still water and salt water first, which is a useful corrective for a visitor arriving with the peninsula's rivers in mind.

Two radars for one peninsula

Forks is covered by Langley Hill; Sequim by Camano Island.

The national forecast service places the Bogachiel gauge in grid square 64 by 95, forecast zone WAZ329, referenced to Forks, with KLGX as its nearest radar. The Dungeness gauge falls in grid 103 by 92, zone WAZ325, referenced to Bell Hill, with KATX. Both belong to the Seattle and Tacoma office.

Two radars for opposite sides of the same range is not redundancy. The Olympics block radar the way they block weather, and a single site cannot see through them, which is why the coastal radar at Langley Hill exists at all.

The same physical fact that produces the rain shadow produces the radar shadow. If you are watching weather for the west side, the coastal products are the relevant ones, and a forecast written for Puget Sound will not describe what the Pacific is doing to the other coast.

The Skokomish is the coldest and the smallest

57.2 square miles at 762.26 feet, carrying 52.1 cubic feet per second at 13.6 °C.

Its yield of about 0.91 sits between the two extremes on this page, and its elevation is the highest of the four by nearly two hundred feet. Below Staircase Rapids it is draining the eastern flank of the Olympics inside the national park boundary.

Small, high and forested is the combination that has produced cold water in almost every state in this series, and here it delivers 13.6 degrees, which is 56.5 Fahrenheit. On the same afternoon the wettest river on the peninsula was three degrees warmer.

What that establishes is that on this peninsula the rain-forest advantage is about volume rather than temperature. If you want cold water you go up; if you want water at all, and lots of it, you go west. Those are two different trips and only one of them is what the Olympic Peninsula is famous for.

Four stations, 593 feet, and 3.1 degrees

Three usable temperatures ran 13.5, 13.6 and 16.6 °C.

The elevation range across the four stations runs from 169.26 feet at the Bogachiel to 762.26 at the Skokomish. The two highest stations produced the two coldest readings and were within a tenth of a degree of each other.

That is an unusually orderly result. In Utah a comparable elevation range produced almost no separation at all, and in Virginia 730 feet produced 1.6 degrees. Here 593 feet produced 3.1, and the ordering is exactly what elevation would predict.

The reason is the same one that drives the whole page. In a maritime climate with heavy forest cover and abundant water, the physical relationships behave the way the textbook says they should. Elevation buys temperature, volume buys stability, and neither variable is being overwhelmed by a hot dry airmass sitting on top of the state.

So what does a season mean in Washington?

Which side of the mountains, and which authority set the dates.

The physical answer is the rain shadow. On the west side water availability is close to a solved problem and the question becomes temperature and timing. On the east side of the Olympics, and much more so east of the Cascades, availability returns as the binding constraint.

The regulatory answer is co-management. Seasons on many anadromous rivers are negotiated rather than simply published, and they can be set or changed nearer the date than a visitor expects.

Between the two, a Washington trip needs its rules checked later and its water checked less than almost anywhere else in this series. That is the reverse of the usual advice and it follows directly from having rivers that do not run out.

What people here do in late July

They watch the regulations more closely than the gauges.

On the west side of the peninsula, a river carrying two and a half cubic feet per second per square mile in the driest week of the year is not going to disappoint on volume. What changes is what is legal and what is running.

In the rain shadow and up at Staircase, the draw is temperature: 13.5 and 13.6 degrees is genuinely cold water, and those reaches hold species that the warmer lowland rivers cannot.

The high lakes are the other summer answer, and the department promotes them for exactly this season. Getting to them is a walk rather than a drive, which is part of the appeal. The piece on choosing a guide covers finding somebody who works one of these systems properly.

What visitors get wrong about this state

They treat the peninsula as one place and the state as two.

Fifty miles across the Olympics changes the yield by a factor of three and the temperature by three degrees. Booking the wrong side of that is a bigger error than booking the wrong month.

The second misjudgement is expecting low water in summer. Most of this series has been about finding rivers with something left in them; on the west side of the Olympics that concern does not apply, and planning as though it does wastes options.

The third is underestimating the regulatory complexity. With co-managed fisheries and seasons that can be set close to the date, the current rules matter more here than the current flow. Building a week around a rain shadow

Pick a side, and use the other one as the alternative.

The peninsula is compact enough that a base near the middle reaches both coasts, and the two sides fail for unrelated reasons. If the west side is blown out, the rain shadow rivers will not be; if the rain shadow is too low, the west side will not be.

Add the high lakes as a third option for a hot spell, since they sit above everything and the department singles them out as a summer highlight.

Three things to check before driving

The current regulations, which radar covers you, and the station's full name.

Regulations first, and later than you would elsewhere, because co-managed seasons are set nearer the date and can change within one.

The radar second. On a peninsula where the mountains block both weather and radar, the coastal site and the Puget Sound site describe different worlds, and the one covering your side is the one to read.

The station name and elevation third. A Bogachiel-type river at 169 feet and a Skokomish-type reach at 762 are different propositions, and the numbers that distinguish them are published for every gauge. Once the side is settled, a separate article covers the gear.

Where the same weather lands next

One shares the geology, one the interior dryness, one the salmon.

South, Oregon shares the Cascade volcanic rock that produced the only yield in this series higher than the Bogachiel's, and the same wet-west, dry-east split at a larger scale.

East, Idaho is what the interior side of that split becomes when the mountains have finished with the weather. North and west, Alaska shares the coastal rainforest pattern and the anadromous fisheries built on it.

Read together, the three explain why the Olympic Peninsula behaves less like the rest of the lower forty-eight than like the coast running north from it. Day rates across the northwest are compared separately.

No season dates, limits, licence requirements or emergency rule changes appear above. In a state where many seasons are co-managed and can be set close to the date, a summary written in July would be the wrong document to plan from in any case.

Nothing here covers shellfish harvest, which carries its own seasons and its own Department of Health status for each beach, or the tribal fisheries that are managed separately.

No Quinault temperature is quoted anywhere above. That sensor stopped on 30 August 2018; the station's flow and stage were both live.
