How should a guide judge the ice?

By measuring it, today, in more than one place.

The only acceptable answer involves an auger or a spud bar and a set of readings taken on the day, not a report from the weekend.

Ice thickness varies enormously across a single lake because of current, springs, pressure ridges and anything that moves water underneath.

An operator who describes checking as they go, rather than checking once at the access, is describing the practice you want.

Ask what they do about known soft spots, inlets and outlets, and whether they mark a route.

Ask also who else has been on that lake recently, because a working guide knows and a casual one does not.

What does the clothing guidance actually say?

Occupational guidance for cold environments recommends multiple loose layers rather than one thick one, protection specifically for ears, face, hands and feet, waterproof insulated boots, and a hat because a good deal of heat escapes from the head.

How do they get you out there?

On a machine, usually, and that is its own question.

Most operations move clients and gear by snowmobile, side-by-side or truck, and each carries a different exposure.

Vehicle travel on ice is the situation with the least margin, and an operator willing to discuss why they do or do not drive on it is worth listening to.

Ask how far from the access you will be, because that distance is also the distance back if something goes wrong.

Ask what happens if the machine fails, which is a routine event in extreme cold and should have a routine answer.
