Intrepid, a 30 foot North River built in 2018, carries a heated cabin, a fully self contained head and enough deck room that anglers are not working shoulder to shoulder. It leaves Auke Bay in Juneau for salmon fishing and whale watching, taking local anglers as well as visitors. Captain John came to guiding after more than 30 years working in natural resource management, has been boating and fishing Juneau area water since 2011, and is licensed by the US Coast Guard. Rates are quoted for the boat rather than per head, so a party fishes on its own, and they step up with group size to a cap of six guests. Fishing runs at 4, 6 and 8 hours; whale watching at 2.5 and 4 hours, with longer runs quoted by phone. Every trip includes transport to and from the dock, snacks and non-alcoholic drinks, and the 6 and 8 hour trips add a sandwich for lunch. Salmon may be kept, but the operator states that halibut is catch and release only at present. A 5 percent Juneau sales tax is added, and licenses, king salmon stamps and gratuity are separate. Cancellations bring a full refund at 30 days or more, half at 7 to 29 days, and none inside a week, with a full refund if the trip is called off for weather or a mechanical problem. The captain is also an ordained minister and officiates weddings.
